Bryan Bedford became FAA Administrator after the Senate confirmed him on July 9, 2025, and the FAA announced him in the role the next day. He brought more than three decades of aviation-industry experience, including 26 years leading Republic Airways. At his confirmation hearing, senators also pressed him on whether he would preserve the 1,500-hour pilot training rule.

When did Bryan Bedford become FAA Administrator?

The Senate’s official roll-call record lists the confirmation vote for Bryan Bedford, of Indiana, to be FAA Administrator on July 9, 2025. The FAA welcomed him as its new Administrator on July 10; his agency biography says he was sworn in during July 2025.

That sequence is what “tapped” means in this case: Bedford was nominated, confirmed by the Senate, and then announced by the FAA as its new Administrator. The Senate Commerce Committee held his nomination hearing on June 11, 2025.

What was Bedford’s background before the FAA?

The FAA describes Bedford as an aviation-industry veteran with more than 35 years in the industry. He led Republic Airways for 26 years. According to the FAA biography, Republic grew during his tenure from $85 million in revenue and 36 turboprop aircraft to more than $3 billion in revenue and a fleet of more than 250 jets. Those figures are the agency biography’s account of the company’s growth.

What concern arose at his confirmation hearing?

The Senate Commerce Committee’s account of the hearing said Bedford “failed to commit not to weaken the 1,500-hour pilot training rule if confirmed.” The rule concerns the flight-hour requirements associated with training and eligibility for airline pilots. This was the committee’s characterization of his hearing answers, not a Senate vote on the rule or proof of a later policy change.

The hearing record provides the fuller context for the exchange. The available appointment and hearing records establish that the issue was raised; they do not, by themselves, establish what policy Bedford later adopted or comprehensively resolve the rule’s subsequent status.

What priorities did Bedford describe?

In later official testimony, Bedford described strengthening aviation safety and modernizing air traffic control as priorities. He also pointed to changes the FAA would need to prepare for, including unmanned aircraft, advanced air mobility, commercial space launches, and renewed interest in supersonic flight. These were priorities he stated in testimony, not evidence that the work has been completed.

In the FAA’s July 10, 2025 announcement, Bedford said: “I have a deep respect for the important work FAA employees do to protect the safety and efficiency of our national airspace.”
