During Stripe’s January 2025 layoffs, some affected employees received a cartoon duck PDF by mistake in their notification emails. The file was labeled “US-Non-California Duck.” Some employees also received incorrect termination dates. Stripe apologized and said corrected, complete notifications had been sent; public reports did not explain why the duck file was attached.
What happened with Stripe’s layoff emails?
Stripe announced about 300 departures in January 2025, largely in product, engineering and operations, according to Fortune’s January 22 report. A Stripe spokesperson confirmed to Fortune that some affected employees’ emails included an accidental PDF attachment showing a cartoon duck labeled “US-Non-California Duck.”
A separate report published by WRAL carrying CNN Business on January 23 said some employees also received incorrect termination dates. Stripe chief people officer Rob McIntosh said, “Some impacted Stripes received a notification error to their personal email accounts Monday evening PT.”
Did Stripe correct the notifications?
McIntosh apologized for the error and confusion, and said corrected, full notifications had been sent to all impacted employees. Fortune also reported that the January 2025 severance plan included earned annual bonuses; that report describes the plan at the time, not Stripe’s current policy.

The reporting does not establish why the duck PDF or its label appeared in the emails. Fortune reported that Stripe declined to provide further details. The label alone does not show that the attachment represented a legal category or that the image was deliberately sent.
What the incident does—and does not—show
The reports document errors in a specific round of January 2025 layoff notifications: an unintended attachment and, for some recipients, incorrect dates. They do not provide evidence about how often workplace notification errors occur more broadly, or establish the internal process that caused these mistakes. Gizmodo’s contemporaneous account also described the duck attachment and date errors.
