Portsmouth sold him to Middlesbrough in 2005. The often-cited £3.5m profit is best understood as an approximate gross fee spread—not a verified net profit: published transfer fees differ, and Maccabi Haifa was entitled to part of the resale proceeds.
How Yakubu joined Portsmouth
UEFA reported on 4 January 2003 that 20-year-old Nigerian striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni had agreed to join Portsmouth on loan from Maccabi Haifa until the end of the season. The arrangement included a conditional route to a permanent transfer if Portsmouth won promotion, with a further €6m payable under the option. UEFA’s January 2003 report records the loan terms.
Portsmouth earned promotion, and UEFA reported on 30 April that Haifa had sold Yakubu to the club. That report said Portsmouth stated the fee was below the €6m Haifa had reportedly sought. It does not establish one uncontested final purchase price. Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric described the striker at the time as “a real jewel in the crown”—a contemporary expression of confidence, not evidence of the eventual financial return. How many goals did Yakubu score for Portsmouth?
Seven goals in the promotion campaign
Yakubu scored seven times for Portsmouth during the 2002/03 promotion push. Accounts differ in how they count his appearances: one Guardian feature says seven goals in 12 starts; a later retrospective gives seven league goals in 13 matches. Those are not interchangeable measures, so the most consistent summary is seven goals during the promotion campaign. The Guardian’s 2003 feature and its later retrospective give the differing counts.

Portsmouth’s leading scorer in two Premier League seasons
The Premier League’s Portsmouth season-history record lists Yakubu as the club’s leading scorer in both 2003/04 and 2004/05. It records 16 goals in 2003/04 and 12 in 2004/05; Portsmouth finished 13th and 16th in those seasons, respectively. These are the Premier League record’s club top-scorer figures. Premier League: Portsmouth season history
A Guardian report gives a different competition scope: 19 goals in all competitions in the previous campaign, then 17 in all competitions in 2004/05, including 13 league goals. Keep those totals distinct from the Premier League page’s 16- and 12-goal figures; the numbers describe different tallies. The Guardian’s 2005 report

What does the £3.5m profit claim mean?
The headline figure should not be read as an audited or reconciled net gain for Portsmouth. It appears consistent with a simple comparison between an approximately £4m purchase price and a reported £7.5m Middlesbrough fee. But reporting on both ends of the transfer varies, and a resale clause entitled Maccabi Haifa to a share of the proceeds. The available accounts do not establish Portsmouth’s net profit after that payment and any other transaction costs.
| Part of the transfer | What published accounts report |
|---|---|
| Portsmouth purchase from Maccabi Haifa | UEFA reported the final fee was below the €6m Haifa had reportedly wanted. A later Guardian account says Portsmouth paid £1.5m. The reports do not establish one uncontested purchase price. UEFA, 30 April 2003; The Guardian, 2007 |
| Sale to Middlesbrough | The Guardian reported £6m in May 2005, £6.5m in a 16 May account and £7.5m in a 2007 retrospective. The Guardian, May 2005; The Guardian, 2007 |
| Maccabi Haifa’s resale share | A May 2005 report said Haifa was due 50% of the transfer fee above the £1.5m it had received from Portsmouth. A 2007 account said Portsmouth and Haifa each received around £3.75m from the reported £7.5m deal. These are reported terms and proceeds, not a reconciled Portsmouth profit calculation. The Guardian, May 2005; The Guardian, 2007 |
| Meaning of “£3.5m profit” | An approximate gross comparison between purchase and resale fees; not an established net figure after Haifa’s share and other costs. |
The difference matters: a transfer’s headline sale price is not necessarily the amount retained by the selling club. In Yakubu’s case, the reported sell-on entitlement means Portsmouth did not simply keep the full Middlesbrough fee. The published reports do not supply a definitive net-profit calculation.
