Scopely completed its $3.5 billion purchase of Niantic’s games business on May 29, 2025. The transaction included Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, companion app Campfire, service Wayfarer and the games team—not every part of Niantic. Scopely is wholly owned by Savvy Games Group.
Did Scopely buy Pokémon GO?
Yes. Pokémon GO was among the games in Niantic’s games business acquired by Scopely. The agreement was announced on March 12, 2025, and Savvy Games Group confirmed it had closed on May 29, 2025. The announcement and close confirmation both gave the transaction value as $3.5 billion. Scopely’s announcement said the deal was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals; Savvy’s close announcement confirmed completion.
What did the $3.5 billion deal include?
The companies described the transaction as the acquisition of Niantic’s games business. The announced portfolio and services included:
- Pokémon GO
- Pikmin Bloom
- Monster Hunter Now
- Campfire, a companion app
- Wayfarer, a service
- The games team
The stated scope is important: these announcements concern the games business, not all of Niantic. They do not provide a detailed asset-by-asset breakdown or explain the consideration structure.

What happened to the games team after the sale?
In a 2026 update, the Pokémon GO team said the Niantic games team had officially changed its name to Scopely Explore. The same update said the Pokémon GO team remained the same. Those are the team’s own statements about the transition, not a guarantee about future staffing or gameplay. Read the Pokémon GO team’s update.
Scopely’s 2026 retrospective described the post-close effort as unifying teams while preserving creative autonomy and existing leadership input. That is the acquirer’s account of its integration approach, rather than an independent assessment. Scopely’s retrospective also places the closing in May 2025.

It also reported more than 100 million unique Pokémon GO players in 2024 and two million Pokémon GO Fest tickets sold that year. These figures appeared in Scopely’s 2025 announcement; they are company-reported historical figures, not independently audited figures or a measure of current performance.
