The highest reported single-film payday in the available estimates is Bruce Willis’s for The Sixth Sense: Celebrity Net Worth puts his total compensation at $114 million in its August 2026 ranking. That is an estimate, not an audited figure, and the same publisher gave a different estimate—$120 million—in 2025. Tom Cruise’s reported Top Gun: Maverick compensation is $100 million or more, but its exact total is not public and could be higher.
These figures refer to estimated total compensation tied to a film role, not simply the actor’s guaranteed salary. Backend participation can turn a smaller upfront fee into a much larger final payday.
How the highest-paid movie roles compare
The amounts below are nominal reported estimates of total compensation attributed to an individual film role. They are not verified contract disclosures. A figure such as “at least $70 million” signals a reported floor, while “$100 million or more” does not establish an exact total.
| Film | Actor | Reported total compensation | What the estimate reflects |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Sixth Sense | Bruce Willis | $114 million | Celebrity Net Worth’s August 2026 estimate; reported as a $14 million base plus backend and home-video participation. Its 2025 estimate was $120 million. |
| Top Gun: Maverick | Tom Cruise | $100 million or more | Reported total; the exact amount is private and not established. |
| Mission: Impossible II | Tom Cruise | $100 million | Reported total estimate. |
| War of the Worlds | Tom Cruise | $100 million | Reported total estimate. |
| Men in Black 3 | Will Smith | $100 million | Reported total estimate, including backend participation. |
| Avengers: Endgame | Robert Downey Jr. | $75 million | Reported total estimate, including backend participation. |
| Gravity | Sandra Bullock | At least $70 million | Reported estimate; the described deal included $20 million upfront and 15% first-dollar gross, plus other revenue. |
| Forrest Gump | Tom Hanks | $70 million | Reported total estimate; Hanks reportedly accepted a pay cut for first-dollar gross points. |
| Batman | Jack Nicholson | $60 million | Reported total estimate; Nicholson reportedly took a reduced salary with participation tied to the film and related revenue. |
Except for the separately noted 2025 Willis estimate, the figures in this table are from Celebrity Net Worth’s August 18, 2026 ranking of large movie paydays. The figures are estimates, not audited compensation records.

Why a movie payday can be much larger than a salary
A guaranteed salary is the amount an actor is promised for appearing in a film. Total compensation can also include backend payments—contractual participation in revenue or other income connected to the film. The distinction matters because an actor may accept less guaranteed pay in return for a share of a successful movie’s earnings.
- Ordinary profit participation: Payments depend on how a contract defines profits after specified costs and deductions.
- First-dollar gross participation: A share is calculated from revenue earlier in the financial chain, before most production, marketing, and distribution expenses are deducted. That can make it more valuable than ordinary profit participation.
- Other revenue: Deal terms may include participation in home-video sales, television licensing, or other income, alongside box-office receipts.
Celebrity Net Worth’s September 30, 2026 explainer on salaries and backend deals describes these distinctions. Participation also carries risk: when a film underperforms, a lower guarantee may not be made up by revenue-based payments.

What the headline figures say about the deals
Willis: a reported base plus participation
For The Sixth Sense, the 2026 estimate breaks the reported $114 million total into a $14 million base and backend and home-video participation. Celebrity Net Worth’s earlier July 6, 2025 account of the largest single-movie payday estimated the total at $120 million. Because these estimates differ, $114 million is best treated as the later estimate, not as a definitive contract figure.
Cruise: a large reported total, but a private final amount
Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick compensation is reported at $100 million or more, with gross participation among the deal structures associated with his large movie paydays. The exact final total is not publicly established. The estimate may exceed Willis’s reported amount in nominal dollars, but the available figure does not allow a precise comparison.

Bullock, Hanks, and Nicholson: different routes to large totals
The reported Gravity deal paired Bullock’s $20 million upfront amount with 15% first-dollar gross and other revenue, producing an estimate of at least $70 million. Hanks reportedly exchanged some guaranteed pay on Forrest Gump for first-dollar gross points. Nicholson’s Batman arrangement reportedly combined a reduced salary with participation tied to the film and related revenue. These examples show why a ranking by total payday is not a ranking by upfront salary.

A fair ranking needs to compare the same kind of compensation over the same scope. A single-role total should not be mixed with annual actor earnings, a multi-film contract package, or producer and ownership proceeds. Even within a single-film list, reported estimates vary in certainty: Willis’s figure has two different estimates from the same publisher, and Cruise’s Maverick total remains private.

Keanu Reeves’s reported $90 million to $200 million for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions is a combined estimate for the two-film package, not a reliably assignable amount for either role alone. The films were produced as a connected back-to-back production, and the source says there is no reliable public basis to split that compensation precisely. It should not be placed as one film’s payday or divided into a per-film figure.
All listed amounts are nominal reported dollars. An inflation-adjusted ranking would require one consistent conversion year and method across every film; the cited estimates do not provide that comparison.
