Perth businessman Ted Powell donated $100 million to Murdoch University in a gift announced on 7 August 2025. The university says the money will fund a planned redevelopment of its School of Veterinary Medicine, with a larger facility designed to support teaching, research and more veterinary-student training.
Who gave Murdoch University $100 million?
The donor is Ted Powell, a Perth businessman and philanthropist. Murdoch University announced the gift on 7 August 2025, and ABC News reported it the same day. Murdoch’s 2025 Annual Report later described it as the largest gift of its type received by a Western Australian university and among the largest received by an Australian university—not definitively the largest in Australia.
ABC News reported that Powell built his wealth through a Hong Kong-based business that created and sold offshore shelf corporations, and later became involved in developing the Richardson Hotel in West Perth. That is background reported by ABC, not a complete biography.
What will the donation fund?
Murdoch says the gift will fund redevelopment of its School of Veterinary Medicine, replacing the existing school with a planned facility of about 9,600 square metres. The university describes the new building as supporting veterinary teaching and research. Its 2026 Annual Report continued to identify the gift with new facilities for the school, but that reporting does not establish whether construction has begun or the project’s current status.

How many more students could the school train?
The university’s stated plan is to increase veterinary-student training capacity by 50%. ABC News reported the university’s planned annual figures at announcement as a rise from 105 to 150 students trained per year. Those figures describe intended capacity, not current enrolments or a confirmed increase already achieved.
What was Powell’s reason for giving?
ABC News reported Powell saying that he and his late wife, Dee, had no children and wanted their assets to go to worthy organisations. The university’s announcement also quoted Powell describing Dee as an animal lover and saying he believed she would be proud of the veterinary-school project.

The Australian Veterinary Association reported in 2025 that the redevelopment was expected to take five years. That was a projected duration at the time, not confirmation of the present schedule or a completion date. The university’s later annual-report reference confirms the intended purpose of the gift but does not provide a construction-status update.
