That is Sony’s stated milestone, not an exact final count. It supports describing the PS2 as one of the best-selling consoles in history, but the available figures vary by source and reporting period, so they do not establish a single, precisely comparable all-time ranking.
What Sony’s 160-million update says
Sony’s PlayStation anniversary-history page describes the PS2 as “one of the biggest-selling video game consoles of all time” and says more than 160 million consoles have sold worldwide since 2000. The key word is over: Sony does not publish an exact unit count on that page.
The statement is a worldwide sales milestone for the console. It is not a current production announcement, and it should not be read as a precise ledger of every unit sold through the present day.
Why published PS2 totals differ
The figures refer to different sources and time frames. Comparing them without their dates and definitions can make a discrepancy look like a simple arithmetic error when the sources do not claim to measure the same thing.

| Figure | Source and period | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Over 160 million worldwide | Sony PlayStation anniversary history, published in 2024 | Sony’s qualified public milestone; no exact count is stated. |
| 150 million worldwide | Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., cumulative sales as of January 31, 2011 | A dated sales milestone. Sony said it came 10 years and 11 months after the PS2 launched in Japan in March 2000; the release footnotes the figure as sell-in. |
| 157.68 million | Guinness World Records, record entry covering the period through the PS2’s discontinuation on January 4, 2013 | A total in Guinness’s best-selling sixth-generation console record entry, with its own record framing. |
| 155 million | Sony business-data page, as reported by Gematsu on November 26, 2024 | The figure Gematsu said Sony’s separate business-data page listed at that time. |
The 2024 contrast between Sony’s anniversary page and its separate business-data page is a real difference in public reporting. It does not, by itself, explain the intervening sales or supply an exact final total. The Guinness figure is likewise a separate record entry, not a replacement for Sony’s later wording.
Does this make the PS2 the best-selling console ever?
Sony calls the PS2 one of the biggest-selling consoles of all time, and the figures above show why it is commonly discussed among the leaders. But the title “most successful” depends on what is being compared: a source’s reported sales or shipments, the period covered, the geographic scope, and whether the number is exact or qualified. Sony’s “over 160 million” wording is not a precise count that can be directly reconciled with every other record entry.

For a careful statement, say that Sony says the PS2 has sold over 160 million units worldwide since 2000. Keep “over,” name Sony, and avoid presenting that as an exact universally agreed total.

Sony’s 2011 announcement also gives context for the console’s reach, without proving why it sold as many units as it did. The company reported more than 10,828 PS2 software titles and more than 1.52 billion PS2 software units sold worldwide; the software-sales footnote covers the end of December 2011. The release also identified DVD playback capability and accessories including the DUALSHOCK 2 and EyeToy USB Camera. These are documented platform facts, not a causal breakdown of the console’s sales success.

A separate regional milestone came from John Koller, then vice president of PlayStation Brand Marketing at SIEA. In a January 15, 2009 PlayStation Blog post, he said PS2 sales in North America passed 50 million in December 2008. That is a regional figure and should not be substituted for a worldwide total.

How to read a console-sales record
- Identify the publisher: Sony’s corporate milestone and a Guinness record entry are different sources.
- Check the date: A 2011 cumulative figure, a record tied to 2013 discontinuation, and a 2024 public milestone describe different reporting points.
- Check geography and measure: Worldwide sales, North American sales, and sell-in figures are not interchangeable.
- Preserve the wording: “Over 160 million” does not mean exactly 160 million.
