Amazon’s 30,000 Corporate Job Cuts: What Was Reported and What Amazon Announced

Reuters first reported a possible reduction of up to 30,000 Amazon corporate jobs. Amazon later announced about 14,000 cuts in October 2025 and 16,000 more in January 2026.

Amazon did not initially confirm a plan to eliminate 30,000 jobs. Reuters reported on October 27, 2025, citing three people familiar with the matter, that the company planned to cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs; the scope was uncertain and Amazon declined to comment. Amazon later announced two rounds of approximately 14,000 and 16,000 corporate role reductions, in October 2025 and January 2026 respectively. Those announced rounds total about 30,000 roles.

Was Amazon laying off 30,000 employees?

The figure began as a report about a planned reduction, not an official Amazon announcement of a final count. Reuters reported on October 27, 2025, that Amazon planned to cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs, citing three people familiar with the matter. The report said the scope could change. Reuters’ report estimated the plan at nearly 10% of roughly 350,000 corporate employees at the time; that was a contemporaneous estimate, not a current workforce percentage.

Amazon subsequently announced reductions of approximately 14,000 corporate roles in October 2025 and approximately 16,000 additional roles in January 2026. Together, the two announced rounds amount to about 30,000 positions. They should not be confused with the initial report’s “up to 30,000” estimate, which preceded the company’s announcements.

How the reported plan became two announced rounds

Date Status and number Scope and context
October 27, 2025 Reuters reported a plan to cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs, citing three people familiar with the matter. The number and scope could change; Amazon declined comment. A reported anticipated reduction, not a company-confirmed count. Reuters’ nearly 10% estimate used the roughly 350,000 corporate headcount cited at that time. Reuters
October 28, 2025 Amazon announced approximately 14,000 corporate role reductions. The company said organizational changes were intended to reduce layers and bureaucracy, increase ownership, and shift resources to priorities. Amazon
January 2026 Amazon announced approximately 16,000 additional role reductions. This second announced round brought the two rounds to about 30,000 roles in total. Amazon; GeekWire
October 8, 2026 Reuters reporting described fewer than 1,000 administrative job cuts. A separate later reduction, mainly in Amazon’s Stores division—not an addition to the October 2025 and January 2026 total. Cinco Días, citing Reuters

Why did Amazon say it was reducing corporate roles?

In its October 2025 and January 2026 announcements, Amazon described the changes as an effort to reduce organizational layers and bureaucracy, strengthen ownership, and direct resources toward priorities. These are the company’s stated reasons; they do not establish one cause for every role affected.

In January, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, Beth Galetti, wrote: “While many teams finalized their organizational changes in October, other teams did not complete that work until now.” She also addressed concern that broad reductions would become routine: “Some of you might ask if this is the beginning of a new rhythm – where we announce broad reductions every few months. That’s not our plan.” Amazon’s January update also said teams would continue evaluating operations and make adjustments as appropriate, so Galetti’s statement is Amazon’s position, not a guarantee that no further roles will change.

Which Amazon employees were affected?

The October and January announcements concerned corporate roles. The available announcements do not establish a complete list of affected teams or provide a single role-by-role accounting across both rounds. Amazon’s January update said some teams completed organizational changes in October while others completed them in January; it did not mean every affected employee was notified on the same date.

The later October 2026 report concerned fewer than 1,000 administrative employees, mainly in the Stores division. That is distinct from the earlier corporate reductions and should be treated as a separate event.

What transition support did Amazon describe?

Amazon said most US-based employees affected by the announced changes would have 90 days to look for another position internally. Employees who could not or did not want to move to another role would receive transition support that included severance, outplacement services, and applicable health benefits. The company said timing for employees outside the United States could vary according to local requirements. Amazon’s October announcement and January update describe the arrangements.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show

Reuters also cited an estimate of 1.55 million Amazon employees overall in its October 2025 coverage. That figure, like the roughly 350,000 corporate employee estimate, reflects the reporting at that time; it is not a current post-reduction headcount. The available sources do not establish Amazon’s exact corporate workforce after the two rounds, so they do not support a reliable current percentage of employees cut.

The clearest count is therefore the company’s approximate totals for the two announced rounds: 14,000 roles in October 2025 and 16,000 additional roles in January 2026. The earlier “up to 30,000” figure was a reported plan, while the fewer-than-1,000 Stores-related cuts reported in October 2026 were a separate later reduction.
