A Reddit List of “Sketchy” Tech Employers: How Job Seekers Should Vet the Claims

A Reddit list of “sketchy” tech companies is an unverified collection of anecdotes, not a current blacklist. Use it to guide careful review of a specific job offer and contract.

A Reddit thread titled “A list of sketchy companies to steer clear of” is a collection of user reports, not a verified blacklist. Posted in r/cscareerquestions on August 10, 2019, it names companies and recruiting or training programs while describing a range of alleged concerns. The thread can help you identify questions to ask, but it cannot establish that a company is currently unsafe or that every allegation is true.

What the Reddit thread says—and what it does not prove

The original post presents names commenters associated with scams or questionable practices, and its author says the list is not exhaustive. The examples span staffing firms, training and placement programs, recruiters, and employers. The discussion does not use a consistent evidentiary standard, and its reports are anecdotes rather than independently verified findings. Read the August 10, 2019 thread.

Names appearing in the post include Hire Experts Solution, Talent Path, FDM, TechField, Smoothstack, Quintrix, Cogent Infotech, Numero Data, Miracle Software Systems, Sollers College, Revature, CyberCoders, Aspiritech, Credible Behavioral Health Software, Empowr, Perficient, and KGS Group. Their inclusion here reports what the thread contains; it is not a finding that any named organization committed wrongdoing or is currently a bad choice.

Why “sketchy” can mean very different things

The complaints do not describe one uniform type of alleged misconduct. They raise questions about financial exposure, employment terms, and recruiting practices. Treat each claim as specific to its commenter and circumstances rather than transferring it to every role, location, or time period.

  • Training and placement: commenters raised concerns including an alleged upfront course deposit, low training pay, relocation requirements, and uncertainty about whether training would lead to a placement.
  • Contracts and repayment: some reports focused on repayment clauses or other obligations that could make leaving costly.
  • Work and compensation: allegations included differences in pay or benefits and poor workplace treatment.
  • Recruiting: complaints included recruiter spam and job listings that were unclear.

These categories describe the issues discussed, not verified policies of the companies named. A low-paying role, a poor workplace experience, a confusing listing, and fraud are distinct concerns; one does not prove another.

The thread contains disagreement, not a company verdict

Commenters do not agree on every company. In the discussion, one contributor raises concerns about Revature, while another describes a positive training and placement experience and explains the contract terms as they understood them. Both accounts are personal reports; neither establishes how every candidate will be treated or what the terms are today. The disagreement is a reason to examine the specific offer and documents, not to average anecdotes into a definitive rating. The discussion and its comments.

How to assess a training, staffing, or placement offer

Before signing or paying, get the complete agreement and resolve the practical consequences of the arrangement in writing. Focus on the terms that determine your costs, income, and ability to leave.

  1. List every possible cost. Ask whether there is an upfront fee, deposit, training charge, or repayment obligation. Get the amount, the event that triggers payment, any deadline, and the circumstances in which the amount is waived.
  2. Read the exit terms. Confirm the contract’s duration, how either side can end it, what repayment applies if you leave or are dismissed, and whether the obligation changes if no placement is found.
  3. Price relocation and housing. Clarify who pays for travel, temporary housing, or a move; whether any assistance must be repaid; and what happens if the assigned work location changes.
  4. Ask what happens after training. Distinguish a guaranteed job from an effort to find a client assignment. Ask what happens if training ends without a placement, how long the search may last, and whether you remain employed during that period.
  5. Get compensation and benefits details. Confirm training pay, the rate and schedule once assigned, benefits eligibility, and whether pay continues during bench time between client assignments.
  6. Identify the parties and the actual role. Ask which legal entity will employ and pay you, who the client is, what work you will perform, and where you will work. Seek enough identifying detail to verify that the opportunity is real.
  7. Keep written confirmation. Save the offer and agreement, and ask the recruiter to put important promises or explanations in writing. Compare those statements with the binding contract before committing.

How much weight to give the list today

The thread has received additions years after its original 2019 post, including names and claims posted in 2026. Those later comments show continued reader activity, but they do not demonstrate a systematic process for verifying, reviewing, or updating the list. Company names, ownership, policies, and contract terms can change, so check recent independent information and the documents for the exact role and location you are considering. The thread alone is not a sound basis for deciding whether an employer is currently safe or unsafe.
