Priceline’s Name Your Own Price: How the Travel Bidding Model Worked

Priceline’s Name Your Own Price let travelers bid for discounted travel without choosing the supplier. Here’s how it worked, why it declined, and what Express Deals changed.

Priceline’s Name Your Own Price let travelers submit an offer for a flight, hotel stay, or rental car without first learning which supplier would fulfill it. It was a trade: a chance at a discounted rate in exchange for flexibility about the provider and, often, the travel terms. Priceline no longer offers the airfare bidding service; its later opaque deals, such as Express Deals, use posted prices rather than customer bids.

How Priceline’s Name Your Own Price worked

Under the model described in Priceline’s 2014 Form 10-K, travelers submitted a price for a leisure travel service. Priceline checked confidential discounted rates supplied by participating providers and decided whether it could fulfill the offer. If so, Priceline selected the provider and the price it would accept.

Providers used the arrangement to sell excess capacity at lower prices without disrupting their existing distribution channels or publicly changing retail prices. The traveler’s offer was not a conventional open auction: Priceline’s filing describes a private inventory-and-fulfillment process, not live competing bids or a public auction in which buyers bid against one another. That distinction matters: naming a price did not mean the traveler controlled which supplier accepted it.

What travelers gave up for the potential discount

The central compromise was uncertainty. The supplier’s identity was withheld until after the reservation, and available offers depended on participating providers’ limited discounted inventory. Provider restrictions and high-demand travel periods could further limit what Priceline could fulfill. The service therefore suited someone willing to prioritize price over choosing a particular airline, hotel, or rental company.

  • Price: You named an offer rather than selecting from a standard posted fare or rate.
  • Supplier: You did not know the provider before the reservation.
  • Availability: An offer could not be fulfilled if suitable discounted inventory was unavailable.
  • Flexibility: Travelers had to accept the restrictions attached to the service and the provider’s inventory.

Why Priceline moved away from bidding

In its 2016 third-quarter Form 10-Q, Priceline cited competition, complexity, traveler restrictions, difficulty making the service work well on mobile devices, and limited provider inventory—especially during high-demand periods—as factors in Name Your Own Price’s decline. The company had introduced Express Deals in 2012 and said it increasingly de-emphasized the bid-based service.

In a February 1, 2016 announcement, Priceline described its evolution “from a bidding model to a predominantly published price model.” The announcement also promoted Express Deals as offering “deeper discounts” and Name Your Own Price as offering “the lowest price possible.” Those are company marketing claims, not independent proof that either model always produced the lowest available price.

When Name Your Own Price ended—and what is not established

Priceline’s 2016 filing states that it stopped offering Name Your Own Price airline tickets on September 1, 2016. It also says the company had recently stopped offering Name Your Own Price rental cars on its mobile website. That mobile-platform detail does not establish when rental-car bidding ended on every platform, and the filing does not give a comprehensive end date for hotel bidding. It would be inaccurate to treat the airfare date as the proven end date for every category.

Name Your Own Price versus Express Deals

Express Deals preserve some of the supplier uncertainty but remove the customer bid. Priceline sets a price that the traveler can see before purchase; the precise supplier remains undisclosed until after booking. The distinction is between a bid-based offer and a posted-price opaque deal—not between two names for the same bidding process.

What to check before booking an opaque deal today

Priceline’s current Terms and Conditions describe Express Deals and Pricebreaker as deal programs where customers see selected attributes but do not know the exact supplier until completing the booking. The terms say these bookings are generally noncancelable, nonrefundable, nonchangeable, and nontransferable unless checkout or the itinerary expressly states otherwise. They also say displayed prices include mandatory fees required by Priceline or suppliers. Read the specific offer and checkout terms before paying; do not assume every deal has identical restrictions.
