There is no universal expiration period for a price quote. Look for a stated validity period or “valid until” date, then check the quote’s terms and the rules that apply to your transaction. If the date is missing or has passed, ask the issuer in writing whether the quoted price and terms are still available before you agree or pay.
How long is a price quote valid?
It depends on the quote’s wording and the law that applies to the particular transaction. A quote may state an expiry date or validity period; after that, the issuer may no longer offer the same price or terms. The Western Australian government’s consumer guidance on quotes and estimates advises checking for an expiry date and written detail. No universal duration is established by the official guidance covered here, so don’t assume a quote lasts a standard number of days.
Check the document itself for its date, expiry wording, scope, price, inclusions, exclusions, and conditions for additional work or changes. Confirm you have the latest version: an earlier quote may no longer describe the product, work, or schedule you are considering.
Is a quote the same as an estimate?
Not necessarily. An estimate is generally an approximate guide, while a quote sets out a price for specified work or goods. The legal effect depends on the place and transaction, so these terms should not be treated as interchangeable.

Western Australian consumer guidance distinguishes a quote’s total amount from an estimate that can change. In Queensland, Business Queensland guidance describes an estimate as a rough guide that may change, and says a quote prepared with the required specifications can form part of a binding contract if the customer proceeds. Those are jurisdiction-specific explanations, not a universal rule.
What happens if my quote expires?
An expiry date usually signals that the issuer is not committing to keep the quoted price or terms available after that date. It does not, by itself, answer every legal question about an agreement already made. The wording, whether and how you accepted, the transaction type, and local law can matter.

If a quote may have expired, take these steps before relying on it:
- Find the expiry date or validity period and read the conditions attached to it.
- Check that the quote is the latest version and still covers the same scope, quantities, and timing.
- Ask the issuer in writing whether the original price and terms remain available.
- If the price, scope, or schedule has changed, request an updated written quote before agreeing or paying.
For a significant dispute, consult the consumer or legal resources for the relevant jurisdiction. The sources cited here do not establish one global legal outcome for an expired quote.

Can a quote become a binding agreement?
That depends on the transaction and applicable law. New Zealand’s Consumer Protection guidance describes a quote as an offer for a specified price and says that, after acceptance, charging more generally requires agreement to extra work or a change in scope. This is New Zealand-specific consumer guidance.
In U.S. federal procurement, the rule is different: Federal Acquisition Regulation 13.004 says, “A quotation is not an offer and, consequently, cannot be accepted by the Government to form a binding contract.” In that setting, the government’s order is the offer, and a contract forms when the supplier accepts it. This procurement rule should not be generalized to private sales or consumer quotes.

What should a business include in a quote?
Make the validity period explicit, especially when costs may change. Business Queensland recommends including the quote date and an expiry date. French government guidance also requires validity information for quotes in certain specified activities; those requirements do not apply to every French quote or to other countries.
A practical quote should identify the supplier and customer, describe the scope and relevant quantities, state the price and taxes, explain inclusions and exclusions, set out how extra work or variations are handled, and specify how the customer can accept. Keep a copy of the version issued. This is a useful checklist, not a universal statutory template.
