Huddersfield announced Ledson on a three-year deal on 30 May, with the move due to take effect on 1 July, after his Preston contract ended. BBC Sport reported that he had made 191 league appearances in seven seasons for Preston. The earlier report counted 215 appearances and seven goals in all competitions; those totals use different competition scopes and should not be compared as if both were league figures. Is “it has cost them millions” supported?
No verified figure in the cited reporting supports that conclusion. The documented fact is that Ledson moved when his contract expired, so Preston did not receive a transfer fee for that move. But a free transfer alone does not establish how much the club lost: a defensible figure would need evidence such as a credible valuation at the relevant time, an actual offer Preston could have accepted, the remaining contract period, and a clear accounting basis. It is therefore fair to say Preston let a player leave at contract expiry and received no fee for the move. It is not established that the club could have sold him for a particular amount, that an offer existed, or that any foregone fee would have reached millions. Calling that a proven multi-million-pound cost turns an unquantified counterfactual into a financial fact.

Ledson was one of 10 players reported to be leaving Preston at the end of the 2024–25 season. BBC Sport said six were released when their contracts expired, including Ledson, Emil Riis and Freddie Woodman; four loanees—Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Jayden Meghoma, Ryan Porteous and Sam Greenwood—returned to their parent clubs. Chief executive Peter Ridsdale said the club would likely need at least eight signings. That scale of turnover gives context for why the departures attracted attention, but it does not by itself show a financial loss. The reported totals describe players leaving and the club’s expected recruitment needs; they do not state transfer values or calculate the cost of the exits.
