Project Hail Mary earned $140.9 million worldwide during its opening weekend, March 20–22, 2026. That debut—not the film’s later lifetime total—comprised about $80.5 million in North America and $60.4 million internationally across 82 markets, according to The Associated Press.

How much did Project Hail Mary make on opening weekend?

The film’s reported worldwide opening was $140.9 million for March 20–22, 2026. The Associated Press reported about $80.5 million in North America, based on studio estimates, and $60.4 million in international box office across 82 markets. The Los Angeles Times also reported the $140.9 million worldwide debut.

The film opened on 4,007 screens and was rated PG-13, AP reported. It adapts Andy Weir’s novel Project Hail Mary.

Opening weekend is not the same as the film’s total gross

The $140.9 million figure covers just the three-day opening weekend. Box Office Mojo’s worldwide tracker currently lists a later worldwide total of $684,489,947; that is a separate, cumulative figure, not the opening-weekend result. Box Office Mojo’s record is available at Box Office Mojo.

How the opening compared with other films

In its March 2026 coverage, AP described the debut as Amazon MGM’s biggest opening at that time, ahead of the studio’s previous record, Creed III at $58 million. AP also called it the second-biggest opening for a non-franchise film, behind Oppenheimer at $82.4 million, without adjusting for inflation. These are comparisons reported at the time of the debut, not permanent all-time rankings.

IMAX and premium formats contributed to the debut

IMAX Corporation said the film generated $28 million globally on IMAX screens over opening weekend. Its March 23 release itemizes $16.4 million domestically and $11.2 million internationally, totaling $27.6 million; the company’s headline and lead round the global figure to $28 million. AP separately reported $27.6 million from IMAX screens and said premium large-format screens accounted for 56% of the opening-weekend gross.

IMAX said its $16.4 million domestic result represented 20% of the film’s North American debut on 1% of screens. The company also reported 70mm engagements at 16 locations in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. These are opening-weekend figures and do not establish whether the film is still playing in those formats. IMAX’s company statement is at IMAX.

What exhibitors said about audience response

AMC said Project Hail Mary delivered its biggest opening weekend at AMC in 2026 to that date. The company also reported that its global admissions revenue was more than 70% higher than the same weekend in 2025. AMC described the film’s $140-plus million worldwide opening as a media-reported figure, rather than its own gross accounting. Those figures are AMC’s company statements; its release is at AMC.

AP quoted Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of domestic distribution, on the challenge of the theatrical market: “We all know theatrical is not an easy business. It’s tougher today I think than it’s ever been,” he said, adding that “sci-fi movies, to break out to a broad audience, is not the easiest thing to do.” AP also reported that EntTelligence estimated about five million ticket buyers. PostTrak exit polls cited by AP gave the film five out of five stars, with 83% saying they would definitely recommend it; those are attributed estimates and poll results as reported by AP.
