Price high-moisture shell corn (HMSC) by converting a current local dry-corn price to an equivalent value at the corn’s measured moisture, then comparing that estimate with the buyer’s actual deductions and delivery terms. A conversion chart is a starting point—not a local bid. Whole-plant corn silage is a different product and needs a different valuation method.
How to estimate a high-moisture corn price
- Get a current local dry-corn reference. Use a contemporaneous cash price for your area rather than an old example or an unqualified national average.
- Measure the corn’s moisture. The conversion depends on moisture, so use a reading for the lot being priced and follow the meter’s compatibility and calibration instructions.
- Convert using a chart or calculator. The 2026 UW–Madison Extension HMSC conversion chart asks for moisture percentage and dry-corn value. Its estimate also reflects shrink and current LP gas and electricity price assumptions.
- Compare the estimate with the buyer’s written offer. Align units and account for the buyer’s moisture limit, shrink or drying deductions, handling and delivery costs, quality rules, and payment or storage terms.
The reason for adjusting the price is straightforward: a ton of wetter corn contains less dry matter than a ton of corn at the standard 15% moisture reference. South Dakota State University Extension explains that the value should therefore be adjusted downward when dry corn is the benchmark (Valuing High-Moisture Corn and Earlage).
UW–Madison’s 2026 example
In its 2026 chart example, corn at 30% moisture and dry corn valued at $3.80 per bushel produces an estimated equivalent HMSC price of $99.10 per ton. That figure applies to those inputs and the chart’s assumptions; it is not a current universal price or a quote from a local buyer.
What changes the amount you receive
Local cash price and basis
The dry-corn reference should reflect the local market and the relevant date. USDA defines basis as the difference between a local cash price and the futures price. Local supply, storage and transportation availability, demand, and harvest pressure can all affect it; plentiful harvest-time supply tends to weigh on cash prices relative to futures and weaken basis. USDA’s Grain Prices, Basis, and Transportation explainer and Grain Basis dataset can help explain local cash-price differences, but neither is a buyer’s HMSC offer.
#1 Best Overall
- AGRICULTURAL GRAIN CHECKS: This portable corn moisture tester and grain moisture meter supports on-farm reference checks for farmers, grain handlers, and grain or feed processors
- 25 CROP PROFILES: Select the matching profile for corn, wheat, soybeans, paddy rice, barley, oats, sorghum, and other supported crops before each measurement
- CONSISTENT SAMPLE PREPARATION: Use a representative sample, fill the clean and dry chamber evenly, and tighten the cap securely without overtightening for more consistent readings
- AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION: Built-in ATC adjusts the displayed result for sample temperature; for better consistency, let the meter and sample reach similar temperatures before testing
- USER-ADJUSTABLE CORRECTION: When a trusted reference method shows a consistent difference, use the correction setting to adjust the displayed value; the setting remains saved after power-off
Moisture, shrink, and drying
A conversion estimate changes with the moisture reading and the shrink and drying assumptions used. A buyer may use a different schedule or charge than a chart, so ask how moisture is sampled and how the deduction is calculated. Also check whether a quoted price is per bushel or per ton before comparing it with a chart value.
Delivery, quality, and contract terms
Ask for the actual terms that determine the net amount, not just the headline price. Confirm accepted moisture, sampling method, shrink or drying schedule, delivery and handling costs, quality standards, payment timing, and any storage terms. These details are negotiated locally; there is no buyer schedule established here that can safely be assumed for every transaction.

- Direct readout for 40 different grain scales
- Test high moisture grain up to 40%
- Illuminated multilingual display - English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish
- Includes Protective carrying case with shoulder strap
- Single-point or Precision multi-point calibration to match local elevator
Compare offers on the same basis
Before ranking two offers, normalize the units and line up the inputs that affect value:
- Moisture basis and sampling method
- Dry-corn reference price and its date
- Shrink and drying deductions
- Delivery and handling costs
- Quality or grade specifications
- Local basis
- Payment and storage terms
If one offer is stated per ton and another per bushel, or one deducts drying while the other does not, the headline prices are not directly comparable. Ask each buyer for the calculation in writing so you can compare the net value using consistent assumptions.

Do not confuse HMSC with corn silage
High-moisture shell corn is a grain product; whole-plant corn silage is a forage and feed product. Their composition and transaction units differ, so a silage formula should not be used as if it were an HMSC grain bid. University of Missouri Extension’s Pricing Corn Silage recommends comparing silage feed costs on a dry-matter basis and accounting for delivery to the feed bunk, storage losses, and shrink. Its guide identifies corn price, expected grain yield, and responsibility for harvest and transport costs as break-even factors.
How the 2026 loan rate fits in
USDA Farm Service Agency lists a national marketing assistance loan rate for 2026-crop corn of $2.42 per bushel. The agency describes these loans as interim financing that may allow grain to be stored after harvest, when market prices are typically low. It is a program rate, not a local cash bid or an HMSC purchase offer (USDA announcement, April 8, 2026).

Use a local quote for the decision
Local bids, futures, basis, buyer discounts, and energy inputs change. Because the value depends on location and buyer terms, a chart can help translate a dry-corn reference into an HMSC estimate, but only a current local quote with its written deductions establishes what a particular buyer will pay.
