Australian Powerball’s Record A$200 Million Jackpot: What Happened in 2024

No ticket won Division One at A$150 million, sending Australian Powerball’s advertised jackpot to a record A$200 million. Two tickets shared it in the 1 February 2024 draw.

The A$200 million Australian Powerball jackpot was a record offer announced in January 2024—not a current jackpot. It followed a Thursday draw with no Division One winner at A$150 million. When the next draw took place on 1 February, two tickets won Division One and each received A$100 million.

How the jackpot rose from A$150 million to A$200 million

The rollover began when no ticket won Division One in the Thursday draw offering A$150 million. Australian Associated Press reported that 26 ticket holders won Division Two, each collecting A$110,213.60. With no top-division winner, the jackpot estimate climbed for the following Thursday.

On 30 January 2024, Lotterywest described the upcoming A$200 million prize as the biggest jackpot offered in Australian lottery history. This was an advertised pre-draw jackpot, not the amount ultimately paid to one person.

Two tickets split the record jackpot

The 1 February 2024 draw produced two Division One-winning tickets. ABC News reported that one belonged to a couple from Singleton, New South Wales, and the other to a woman from Hawthorne, Queensland. Each ticket received A$100 million, half of the A$200 million jackpot.

The distinction matters: A$200 million was the jackpot advertised before the draw; A$100 million was the share for each of the two winning tickets.

What it took to win Division One

Lotterywest explained that Division One required matching all seven winning numbers drawn from barrel A and the Powerball drawn from barrel B. Other matching combinations could win in lower divisions. ABC News quoted mathematician and author Adam Spencer describing the Division One odds as one in 134 million.

Choosing numbers does not improve the odds

Lotterywest said a player’s odds were the same whether they selected their own numbers or used a Slikpik or other system-generated entry. Historical frequency charts cannot predict the next draw: the numbers are chance-based and change from draw to draw.

Spencer also cautioned that a larger jackpot does not make an individual ticket more likely to win. He told ABC News, “Your individual ticket is no more or less likely to win tonight than it was last week.” If more tickets are sold, however, there may be a greater chance that a jackpot-winning combination is held by multiple tickets and the prize must be shared.

What the event’s sales figures do—and do not—show

The Lottery Corporation’s FY24 results presentation reported A$320 million in turnover for the record event, 47% of sales made digitally, and participation it characterized as one in two Australian adults buying an entry. These are company-reported event figures; they should not be read as an independently audited count of unique players.

Claiming a prize: check the current rules

For the 2024 draw, Lotterywest said it would contact registered members with Division One-winning tickets. It instructed holders of unregistered tickets to scan them at a Lotterywest retailer. The operator said Division One prizes were claimed at its Subiaco office, paid into a nominated bank account within 14 days after the claim, and had to be claimed within 12 months of the draw.

Those were Lotterywest’s instructions for that draw. Claim processes and deadlines can depend on the operator and jurisdiction, so anyone holding a ticket should verify the current official rules that apply to it.
