State planners approved the proposed Aldi redevelopment at the former Captain Stirling Centre in Nedlands on 11 February 2025, according to PerthNow. The approval is for a $12 million project with Aldi, six smaller commercial tenancies, semi-basement parking and a rear laneway. No construction start or store opening date has been established in the available reports.

What is planned for the former Captain Stirling Centre?

The proposal concerns the former shopping centre site at 80 Stirling Highway and adjoining lots at 2, 4 and 6 Florence Road and 7 and 9 Stanley Street in Nedlands. Plans reported in October 2024 showed an Aldi supermarket alongside six smaller commercial tenancy spaces, semi-basement parking and a rear laneway, according to PerthNow.

The City of Nedlands’ project page describes a broader amended application for the Captain Stirling precinct, listing specialty shops, a medical centre, restaurant or café, a small liquor store, private gym and seven offices. These are uses described across that broader application; the seven-office figure is not an Aldi tenancy count.

Residential drawings included in the application materials were indicative only and did not form part of the application, the City says. Any residential development would require a separate planning application, so apartments should not be treated as approved through the Aldi redevelopment.

Has the Aldi redevelopment been approved?

Yes. PerthNow reported on 12 February 2025 that State planners approved the $12 million redevelopment the previous day, 11 February. The approval included conditions. The available reports do not establish whether all conditions have since been met.

When will Aldi open in Nedlands?

No opening date has been established in the available reports, and they do not confirm that construction has started. The October 2024 announcement was a consultation-stage plans release, not an opening announcement. An approved development can still have conditions to satisfy before construction or operation; without a confirmed construction schedule or store announcement, a specific opening date would be speculative.

How the proposal reached approval

  1. 2015: Aldi bought the former shopping centre site, according to PerthNow.
  2. 2018: PerthNow reported that demolition approval had been granted. Demolition and site clearance did not take place until late 2023.
  3. 29 June 2020: The City says the Joint Development Assessment Panel deferred an earlier application, seeking more certainty on traffic, transport and access, further heritage information, and better integration with the Nedlands Town Centre.
  4. After the deferral: The applicant sought a review at the State Administrative Tribunal, and the City advertised amended plans in 2022.
  5. October 2024: Revised plans were released for comment. PerthNow reported that the State Development Assessment Panel would decide the application.
  6. 11 February 2025: State planners approved the redevelopment, as reported by PerthNow the next day.

Is this the same project as Nedlands Square?

No. The Aldi proposal is on the former shopping centre site. The separate Woolworths-led Nedlands Square project is associated with the neighbouring Captain Stirling Hotel redevelopment. They are different sites and planning projects, so an approval or schedule for one does not establish the status or opening date of the other.
