There is no solid evidence that PS5 resale prices are lower than ever, and reports of expensive used PS5 Pro listings do not prove scalpers are making a profit. The current picture is model-specific: Sony raised recommended prices in April 2026, Gumtree reported more UK enquiries for pre-owned consoles, and some US sellers advertised used or refurbished PS5 Pros above Sony’s recommended price.
What PS5 resale prices are telling buyers in 2026
Sony’s recommended US prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are recommended retail prices, not a promise that a retailer has stock or will sell at that price. Sony lists territory-specific prices as well: £569.99, £519.99 and £789.99 in the UK; €649.99, €599.99 and €899.99 in Europe; and ¥97,980, ¥89,980 and ¥137,980 in Japan. See Sony’s March 2026 price announcement for local-market guidance.
For context, Sony’s US launch recommended prices in 2020 were $399.99 for the Digital Edition and $499.99 for the disc-drive model. Those launch prices are not a fair direct comparison with today’s used listings: model, condition, market and date all matter. The documented official prices have risen over time, while the evidence available does not establish a comprehensive all-time resale-price trend.
Why is a used PS5 Pro listed above retail?
On October 6, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported GameStop pre-owned and refurbished PS5 Pro listings at $1,329 and third-party listings on several retail platforms as high as $1,700. The report described those as used, refurbished or open-box offers, and said new units were out of stock at the stores it checked. These are asking prices reported at that time—not confirmed sale prices or a broad measure of the market. Details are in Tom’s Guide’s report on used PS5 Pro listings.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Such a listing can reflect a seller testing what buyers might pay, a temporary shortage at the retailers checked, or a particular seller’s terms. It does not establish that the console sold at that price. The reported examples concern the PS5 Pro in the US, so they should not be generalized to every PS5 model, condition or country.
Are scalpers still profiting?
A listing above Sony’s recommended price shows an asking-price premium, not a completed sale or net profit. To establish profit, you would need the seller’s acquisition cost, any shipping and tax, marketplace fees, and evidence that the item sold. The cited coverage does not provide those details, so it cannot establish scalper earnings.

Sony said its April 2, 2026 price increase reflected “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” A higher official price changes the comparison point, but it does not by itself demonstrate either scarcity or scalper profit. Read Sony’s announcement for the stated price-change context.
What rising used-console enquiries mean—and what they don’t
TechRadar reported Gumtree’s UK enquiries for pre-owned consoles rose 93% year over year and 30% against the March weekly average following the April 2 price change; London enquiries reportedly rose 129%. Gumtree CEO Andy Harper said the price increase had triggered “an immediate reaction from buyers.” These figures measure enquiries on Gumtree, not completed transactions, and are not a census of UK sales or activity across other marketplaces. - 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD

They are evidence of increased interest in second-hand consoles on that platform, not evidence that used prices are falling. More enquiries can coexist with high asking prices, particularly when buyers are comparing the cost of a pre-owned console with the new recommended price.
Does supply data explain resale prices?
Sony reports 16.0 million PS5 hardware units sold in to the channel in FY2025, down from 18.5 million in FY2024, and 1.6 million in FY2026 Q1. These are sell-in figures—units shipped into the channel—not a count of consoles available at local shops or on resale sites. They cannot by themselves explain a particular listing or prove a local shortage. Sony’s figures are available on its hardware sales data page.

How to compare a used PS5 with a new one
Compare the total offer, not just the headline price. A used console can be a reasonable alternative, but it should be assessed against the correct model and the protections included with the sale.
- Match the model: Check whether the offer is for PS5, PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro. Their recommended prices differ.
- Check condition and seller: Distinguish new from used, refurbished and open-box, and identify whether the seller is the retailer or a third party.
- Compare total cost: Include shipping and any other charges, then compare with your market’s current recommended price—not a price from another country or an older launch announcement.
- Review protection: Check the warranty, return window and who handles problems before paying. A lower sticker price may not compensate for weaker recourse if the console is faulty.
- Be cautious with unusually high asks: A listing is not proof of a sale. Compare multiple offers and avoid treating a scarcity-era asking price as the console’s established value.
Why “lower than ever” is not established
A Techfare snapshot recorded five recent PS5 Digital Edition observations on September 15, 2026, ranging from $320 to $479.99. That is a small, mixed-condition set of observations for one model, not a consistent historical price series. It cannot establish an all-time low or describe the whole resale market. See the Techfare PS5 Digital Edition snapshot.

To substantiate “lower than ever,” a comparison would need consistent data over time for the same model, condition, geography and type of price—such as completed sales rather than changing asking prices. The available reports instead show a mix of higher official prices, increased Gumtree enquiries in the UK, and high US PS5 Pro asks during a reported stock shortage at stores checked. That supports a nuanced market story, not a universal record-low claim.
