Sony reported more than 117 million PS4 hardware units sold in by June 30, 2022. A commonly cited Xbox One lifetime figure is 58.00 million, but that is a third-party analyst estimate dated December 31, 2022—not a Microsoft-confirmed total. Because the figures differ in source, date, and measurement, they show the scale of PS4’s lead but do not support an exact official sales ratio.

Sony’s official figure comes from its business data and sales page. The Xbox One estimate is listed by console-tally. The figures are worldwide, but they are not directly matched: Sony reports sell-in, while the Xbox number is a secondary estimate with a later cut-off date. Treat the comparison as evidence that PS4 sold substantially more, not as a precise audited ratio.
What Sony’s PS4 sales figure measures
“Sell-in” means hardware shipped into the retail channel, not a count of consoles confirmed as purchased by consumers. Sony’s more-than-117-million total is therefore an official shipment measure. It should not be described as an exact consumer sell-through total.
The Microsoft annual-report archive examined for this comparison does not provide a directly comparable current Xbox One cumulative unit figure. That does not establish that Microsoft never disclosed any historical sales data; it means a current equivalent to Sony’s stated total is not available in the reporting material used here.

PS4 sales trajectory: annual sell-in and a 2019 milestone
Sony’s annual figures show PS4 hardware sell-in rising to a peak of 20.0 million units in fiscal year 2016, then declining in later fiscal years. Sony’s fiscal years run from April through March.

These are millions of units sold into the channel in each fiscal year, not a consumer purchase count or a rolling calendar-year total. Separately, Sony’s January 8, 2019 announcement said PS4 sales had surpassed 91.6 million worldwide after the holiday season. That dated milestone is part of the console’s sales history, not a replacement for the later cumulative sell-in figure.

How to interpret the Xbox One lifetime sales estimate
Console-tally lists Xbox One sales at 58.00 million as of December 31, 2022 and identifies that total as an analyst estimate. It is useful as an approximate indication of scale, but it is not a number Microsoft confirmed as its lifetime hardware total. The same aggregation lists PS4 at 117.2 million as of March 31, 2022 and labels that figure official; Sony’s own later-published cumulative figure is more than 117 million as of June 30, 2022.
Putting the two headline numbers side by side suggests PS4 sold roughly twice as many units, but that is only an approximation based on unlike measures and dates. It should not be presented as a precise manufacturer-to-manufacturer ratio.

What console sales do—and do not—show
Hardware totals compare the scale of console distribution; they do not by themselves measure software revenue, game engagement, profitability, or overall business success. Digital game-purchase figures are a different measure. For example, Electronic Arts’ FY2021 filing estimated digital full-game purchases at 62% of its measured units across Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 combined. EA reported 49% for the same stated measure in FY2020 and FY2019. Those figures concern EA’s cross-platform game-unit mix, not console market share or a PS4-versus-Xbox One split.
