The Trader Joe’s product behind reports of customer outrage appears to be its former Feta Cheese Spread. Some shoppers asked for it back in 2018 and 2019, but there is no located company statement confirming when or why that specific spread was discontinued. Trader Joe’s currently lists a related Whipped Feta Spread; the available sources do not establish that it is the same product or recipe.
Which spread disappeared?
Secondary reporting places the former Trader Joe’s Feta Cheese Spread’s apparent disappearance in September 2017, but that date is not confirmed by a product-specific announcement from Trader Joe’s. A customer-review page records one shopper asking in January 2018 why the item had been discontinued and another requesting its return in July 2019. Those comments show that individual customers missed it; they do not establish how widespread the reaction was.

Its general FAQ also names seasonal availability, limited supply, and rising production costs as possible factors.

In the company’s Inside Trader Joe’s Episode 99 transcript, President of Marketing Matt Sloan says that “overwhelmingly, the reason for things to be discontinued at Trader Joe’s is a lack of interest, slow sales.” He also discusses quality issues, value, and competitive pressures as other possible contributors. These are general explanations, not confirmation of what happened to this particular spread.

This is a related option, not a verified relaunch of the old Feta Cheese Spread. The sources do not establish that the products have the same formulation or taste. In the podcast, Trader Joe’s representatives say the Whipped Feta Spread arrived as a limited item in spring 2025 and was planned to return as an everyday item in January 2026, with customer and crew response informing that decision. That product history concerns the current whipped spread.

Trader Joe’s describes the spread as suitable for spreading and dipping. Its podcast discussion suggests serving it with bread, chips, or vegetables, and also mentions using it with pasta. Those are ideas for the current Whipped Feta Spread, not evidence of how the former product tasted or was intended to be served.

The podcast also mentions making whipped feta at home with a food processor, but says the homemade result does not taste quite the same as the store product. It does not provide a verified copycat recipe for the discontinued Feta Cheese Spread, so a homemade version should be treated as an experiment rather than a recreation.
