What happened to the Bankwest branch in Morley?
Bankwest’s Morley branch and its ATM closed permanently on 3 September 2024. PerthNow reported that over-the-counter transactions at the branch had fallen 20.8% since February 2023, citing Bankwest branch data; that figure has not been independently audited in the available reporting. PerthNow also reported more than 650,000 online banking logins a day as a Bankwest figure.
The Morley closure was part of a wider move away from Bankwest branches, rather than an isolated local decision.
When did Bankwest close its Perth branches?
On 6 March 2024, Bankwest announced that 45 branches would close by October 2024. PerthNow reported that the remaining bricks-and-mortar services were planned to close by 1 October 2024. Bankwest’s current contact page says the bank has no branches.

Bankwest also said 15 regional locations were expected to convert to Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) branches by the end of 2024. That was an announced plan; the announcement alone does not establish that every conversion was completed.
Why did Bankwest say it was closing branches?
Bankwest said customers were increasingly choosing digital services. In its March 2024 announcement, the bank reported that 97% of its transactions were digital and that fewer than 2% of its customers visited a branch regularly. It also reported average activity of about 30 over-the-counter transactions per day at WA branches and 15 per day at regional WA branches. These are Bankwest’s figures and rationale, not independently verified findings.

Why did the closures draw criticism?
The criticism focused on customers who may have difficulty accessing or using digital banking. ABC reported that Finance Sector Union national assistant secretary Jason Hall argued the closures would disadvantage elderly and Indigenous customers and people for whom English is a second language. He questioned whether online-banking assistance or a move to CBA would adequately meet their needs.
Bankwest customer David Young told ABC, “We can’t all deal with things digitally,” and said some people, including elderly and disabled customers, lack access to digital resources. These comments show the concerns expressed by named people; they are not a representative survey of Perth customers. The available reporting does not count how many customers were affected.
