Spirit Airlines’ fall 2024 schedule shake-up removed dozens of routes, but reports disagreed on the count: AirlineGeeks reported up to 35, while The Points Guy reported 32 planned exits. This is a historical schedule change, not a current availability update. Spirit later announced an orderly wind-down of all operations effective May 2, 2026.
What happened to Spirit’s routes?
On September 28, 2024, AirlineGeeks reported that Spirit was removing up to 35 routes as part of a fall schedule change, based on a Cirium Diio schedule update. Two days later, The Points Guy reported that Spirit planned to exit 32 routes, citing Cirium schedules and confirmation from a Spirit spokesperson. The available reports do not resolve the difference, so neither figure should be treated as a definitive universal count. AirlineGeeks; The Points Guy.
The AirlineGeeks route list covered schedule changes beginning in September, October, or November 2024. It included city pairs such as Atlanta–Chicago O’Hare, Hartford–Orlando, and Nashville–Boston, New York LaGuardia, and Miami. Boston routes named in the report included Charleston, Columbus, Houston, Kansas City, Chicago O’Hare, Norfolk, and Pittsburgh. Dallas/Fort Worth routes included Kansas City, Memphis, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia. Other listed routes involved Charleston, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Louisville, St. Louis, and San Jose. The report’s broad date range does not establish the final flight date for each route.
Why was Spirit shrinking its schedule?
The route changes came amid wider financial and fleet pressures. AirlineGeeks reported that Spirit recorded a net loss of nearly $200 million in the second quarter of 2024 and had aircraft grounded by ongoing Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues affecting its A320neo-series fleet. Those pressures provide context for schedule reductions, but the available reporting does not establish that a specific engine problem or financial calculation caused each route removal. The carrier was slated to operate roughly 18% fewer flights in the fourth quarter of 2024 than in the fourth quarter of 2023. These figures describe reported schedules and market changes at that time; they are not current service statistics. AirlineGeeks.
Can you still book Spirit flights?
No. Spirit’s official restructuring site says the airline began an orderly wind-down of operations effective May 2, 2026. The Department of Transportation has also issued guidance for Spirit customers following the cessation. The 2024 route list cannot be used to determine whether a Spirit flight is available now. Check the airline or travel provider responsible for your current itinerary and consult the DOT’s Spirit Airlines cessation guidance. Spirit restructuring site.

What should travelers with affected tickets do?
If you have a booking affected by Spirit’s shutdown, verify your itinerary and follow the current customer guidance from the Department of Transportation and any booking provider involved. If you bought travel insurance, the DOT advises asking the insurer whether your policy covers insolvency or service cessation. Coverage depends on the policy terms and your circumstances; do not assume that a claim will be reimbursed.
When arranging replacement travel, compare options for the exact dates and cities rather than assuming another carrier serves the same route. Check:
