Oasis Reunion Ticket Sale: What the UK CMA Found About Queues, Pricing and Platinum Tickets

The UK CMA’s investigation found no evidence of real-time algorithmic dynamic pricing in the 2024 Oasis ticket sale. Its concerns centred on tier disclosures and Platinum-ticket labels; Ireland’s CCPC opened a separate investigation.

The Oasis reunion ticket sale in 2024 left fans facing long online queues, error messages and prices that seemed to jump as tickets sold. But the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which concluded its investigation in September 2025, said it found no evidence that Ticketmaster used real-time algorithmic “dynamic pricing” for the UK sale. It described a different mechanism: cheaper standing tickets were sold first, followed by a higher-priced tier. The CMA’s concerns focused on whether fans received clear, timely information about those tiers and about Platinum tickets.

What happened when Oasis tickets went on sale?

The UK sale weekend began on 31 August 2024. Contemporary reporting described fans spending hours in online queues and encountering error messages. Those experiences help explain why many people believed ticket prices were changing as demand rose, but they are not the same as a regulatory finding that the website crashed or that an algorithm changed prices in real time. The Associated Press reported the queue and error problems at the time: its 30 September 2024 report on the reunion tour.

The CMA’s formal investigation addressed consumer-protection questions about pricing information and ticket labels, rather than publishing a total for site crashes or the number of people affected. It said Ticketmaster sold more than 900,000 tickets in the sale, according to the CMA’s 25 March 2025 update.

Was it dynamic pricing?

Not in the real-time, algorithmic sense many fans assumed. In its 25 September 2025 announcement, the CMA said it found no evidence that algorithmic dynamic pricing was used in the UK Oasis sale. Instead, it described tiered pricing: lower-priced standing tickets were made available first, and a more expensive tier was released after the cheaper tier sold out. The CMA’s 25 March 2025 account of its concerns explains that sequence.

That distinction matters to a buyer’s budget. With real-time demand-based pricing, the price itself changes in response to demand. With pre-set tiers, prices differ between groups of tickets, and the price a buyer encounters can be higher once a lower-priced tier is gone. The CMA’s account supports the latter description for this sale; it does not establish that every ticket’s price was adjusted dynamically.

What information and ticket labels concerned the CMA?

Standing-ticket price tiers

The CMA was concerned that fans in online queues did not receive sufficient notice that standing tickets were available at two price levels. It also raised concerns about whether consumers had clear information about the price range and when a higher-priced tier might become available. For someone deciding whether to keep waiting or proceed with a purchase, that information can affect the choice and the amount they are prepared to spend.

Platinum tickets

The CMA also questioned how some “Platinum” tickets were described. It was concerned that the label did not adequately explain that some of these seats carried no extra benefits over standard tickets in the same areas. In its March 2025 update, the CMA said some Platinum tickets were priced near 2.5 times the price of equivalent standard tickets. That figure describes the CMA’s concern about some tickets, not an average price difference for all Platinum seats.

What did the CMA investigation conclude?

On 25 September 2025, Ticketmaster signed undertakings following the CMA’s concerns. The CMA published them that day and closed its consumer-protection case. The undertakings require Ticketmaster to give advance notice of tiered pricing, provide price ranges and updates during queues, use accurate ticket labels, and report to the CMA for two years. The CMA announcement sets out the undertakings.

These were voluntary commitments, not a court judgment or an admission of wrongdoing or liability. The CMA said it had not made findings about whether consumer law was infringed. Its investigation therefore did not prove that Ticketmaster used unlawful dynamic pricing.

Sarah Cardell, the CMA’s Chief Executive, said on 25 September 2025: “Fans who spend their hard-earned money to see artists they love deserve to see clear, accurate information, upfront.”

How is the Irish investigation different?

The UK CMA case concerned Ticketmaster UK. Separately, Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) said on 6 September 2024 that it had opened an investigation into Ticketmaster Ireland’s handling of the sale after reviewing more than 100 complaints received through its helpline. The CCPC’s announcement is separate from the CMA’s UK case.

Brian McHugh, CCPC Chair, said at the time: “While companies in Ireland are allowed to respond to market demand, there are legitimate concerns over how consumers were treated and we have decided that an in-depth investigation is necessary.”

The Irish Times reported on 7 September 2026 that Ticketmaster had been accused of a consumer-law breach over Oasis Croke Park tickets. That is a report of alleged legal action, not confirmation here of its procedural status or outcome; it should not be confused with the UK CMA’s concluded case. The report is available from The Irish Times.
