Novo Nordisk planned to close its Seattle wet-lab operations in 2023, with 86 workers affected, according to a report citing a filing with Washington State’s Employment Security Department. The action concerned experimental lab work—not every Novo Nordisk operation in Seattle. The company said digital therapy, data science, and artificial intelligence work would continue there.
What Novo Nordisk announced in Seattle
On March 1, 2023, GeekWire reported that a Novo Nordisk spokesperson confirmed the company was shutting its Seattle wet-lab operations, also described as experimental labs. The company had established its Seattle research and development center in 2009 and opened an obesity research unit there in 2014, according to the report.
The closure was not described as a complete exit from Seattle. The spokesperson said the company’s Seattle activity would continue in digital therapy, data science, and artificial intelligence.
What the 86-worker figure means
GeekWire attributed the figure of 86 affected workers to a new filing with Washington State’s Employment Security Department. WARNScan, a secondary database of layoff notices, also lists 86 workers for Novo Nordisk Research Center Seattle, Inc. The original state notice was not directly reviewed for this account, so the figure is best understood as the number reported from the filing, with a secondary record corroborating it.

GeekWire said Novo Nordisk would offer affected employees opportunities within the company. Its report does not say how many employees accepted another role or what happened to them afterward.
How the 2023 Seattle action differs from the 2025 global plan
On September 10, 2025, Novo Nordisk announced a separate company-wide transformation that it said was intended to reduce approximately 9,000 roles globally. That later announcement provides context about a subsequent restructuring, but the sources cited here do not establish that it caused, continued, or was otherwise connected to the 2023 Seattle wet-lab shutdown.

For the 2025 announcement, then-president and CEO Mike Doustdar said: “It is always difficult to see talented and valued colleagues go, but we are convinced that this is the right thing to do for the long-term success of Novo Nordisk.” This statement concerned the later global plan, not the Seattle decision in 2023.

The 2023 report describes the planned Seattle lab shutdown and the functions expected to continue at that time. The sources cited here do not establish the Seattle site’s present operating status, the later outcomes of the affected workers, or a direct relationship between the 2023 closure and the 2025 global workforce plan.
