Its fiscal 2024 results showed a net loss and weak automotive cash flow, but the available company reports do not establish that dealers passed those problems on to customers through lower prices. To tell whether a Nissan was a bargain, buyers needed to compare actual local offers, financing costs and the full out-the-door price.
What Nissan’s FY2024 results showed
Nissan’s fiscal year 2024 ended March 31, 2025, and the company announced its results on May 13, 2025. It reported global sales of 3.346 million vehicles and consolidated revenue of ¥12.6 trillion, alongside operating profit of ¥69.8 billion and a net loss of ¥670.9 billion. Automotive free cash flow was negative ¥242.8 billion, while automotive net cash stood at ¥1.498 trillion. Nissan’s FY2024 results show significant financial pressure, but the net-cash figure does not support the claim that the company was out of cash.
Nissan attributed the results to a difficult operating environment as well as internal costs. Its results release cited intensified sales competition. In the accompanying presentation, the CFO pointed to lower sales volumes, weaker vehicle mix, pricing pressure and increased costs as factors weighing on operating profit. Nissan also reported more than ¥460 billion in impairment charges and close to ¥60 billion in restructuring costs in its FY2024 results presentation script.
Why a corporate loss does not prove a retail bargain
A manufacturer’s loss is not the same thing as a dealer discount. The FY2024 results and Nissan’s later recovery-plan announcement do not quantify customer incentives, identify a discounted model or show that buyers captured savings. They establish company-level financial conditions—not the price a shopper could negotiate in a particular city, on a particular vehicle, at a particular time.

For the same reason, it would be too strong to conclude that Nissan’s financial position caused any lower retail price a buyer encountered. A deal needs local, dated evidence, such as a dealer offer, a current inventory listing or transaction-price data. Without it, “your gain” is a possibility to check, not an established result.
What Nissan’s recovery plan targeted
In 2025 Nissan announced Re:Nissan, a plan to improve profitability and reduce costs. The company targeted ¥500 billion in total cost savings versus FY2024, positive operating profitability and free cash flow in the automotive business by FY2026, and a reduction in vehicle production plants from 17 to 10 by FY2027. These were announced targets, not completed results.

Nissan president and CEO Ivan Espinosa described the need for action this way: “In the face of challenging FY24 performance and rising variable costs, compounded by an uncertain environment, we must prioritize self-improvement with greater urgency and speed, aiming for profitability that relies less on volume.” The statement explains management’s priorities; it is not independent evidence that the targets would be achieved. What Nissan’s later FY2025 results changed
Nissan announced its FY2025 results on May 13, 2026. It reported operating profit of ¥58.0 billion and a net loss of ¥533.1 billion. Full-year automotive free cash flow was negative ¥480.8 billion, although it turned positive in the second half at ¥112 billion. The company’s FY2025 results therefore show a modestly different picture: operating profit improved from FY2024, but Nissan still reported a net loss and negative full-year automotive cash flow.

Those later figures provide context about Nissan after 2025; they cannot establish what a buyer actually paid in 2025 or whether the company’s financial position affected that price.

Compare actual offers for the same model year, trim, equipment and geographic market. A headline discount can be misleading if it depends on financing terms, excludes fees or applies to a vehicle that is not available locally.

- Compare the out-the-door price. Include taxes, dealer fees and other required charges, and subtract only incentives for which you qualify.
- Separate the discount from the financing. Compare cash incentives with the offered APR, loan term and total interest. A lower monthly payment can result from a longer loan rather than a lower vehicle cost.
- Check local inventory. Confirm the exact vehicle is available and review how long it has been listed if that information is provided. Inventory age alone does not prove a dealer will negotiate.
- Compare like-for-like alternatives. Evaluate competing vehicles with similar equipment and ownership costs rather than comparing a heavily discounted base trim with a better-equipped model.
- Review warranty coverage and availability. Check the written terms for the vehicle and market, along with any conditions that affect coverage.
Only dated, market-specific pricing can show whether a Nissan offer was unusually good. The financial reports above do not supply dealer prices, financing offers, inventory data or transaction-price comparisons.
