Re:

Did Nintendo Switch Prices Drop at Retailers Before Switch 2?

Nintendo’s official pricing notices explain the Switch 2 context, but no dated retailer evidence here confirms which original Switch models, if any, were discounted or by how much.

There is not enough dated retailer evidence to confirm that Nintendo Switch prices dropped in anticipation of Switch 2, or to say which model, stores, or price changes were involved. Nintendo’s official US pricing notices provide context, but they are not records of retailer sales. As of October 8, 2026, Nintendo said US pricing for the original Switch system was not changing; that does not establish whether a particular retailer discounted it at another time.

What is confirmed about Switch 2 and pricing?

Nintendo described Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch in its January 16, 2025 announcement. It launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo said Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch games, while cautioning that some games might not be supported or fully compatible.

On April 18, 2025, Nintendo said the US launch MSRP would be $449.99 for Switch 2 and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle. Those were manufacturer suggested retail prices, not proof of what retailers charged at checkout. Nintendo’s launch announcement gives that dated US context.

Nintendo later announced that the US Switch 2 MSRP would rise from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. In the same notice, Nintendo of America said, “Pricing for the Nintendo Switch system is not changing.” That statement concerns Nintendo’s US system pricing; it neither confirms nor rules out individual retailer discounts. Which retailers discounted the original Switch, and by how much?

No specific retailer, Switch model, markdown amount, or dated listing is established here. Without a contemporaneous listing or report, it would be misleading to name stores or claim a price drop happened because Switch 2 was approaching.

To evaluate a claimed deal, compare the same model and condition—standard Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED—and check the country, date, checkout total, bundle contents, stock, and return or warranty terms. A bundle price is not directly comparable with a console-only price, and a refurbished or used unit is not equivalent to new hardware.

Is the original Switch cheaper now?

There is no verified current retailer price or model-specific stock information here to answer that with a single price. Nintendo says refurbished physical hardware is often available through Nintendo Store for less than new hardware, but that guidance does not confirm a particular product’s availability or a retailer markdown. Nintendo also says it does not issue coupons for purchases made through retailers. See Nintendo’s support guidance on refurbished products and coupons.

Nintendo’s US retail-offers page currently lists a Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle for $549.99, with stated savings calculated against buying the system, game, and three-month online membership separately. The offer is while supplies last and participating-retailer terms apply. It is a Switch 2 bundle, not a discount on the original Switch; see Nintendo’s current US retail offers. Check the offer page and retailer checkout for current availability and terms.

Does Switch 2’s launch explain a Switch price cut?

Nintendo reported that Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million systems worldwide in its first four days after launch, which the company described as the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware in its first four days. This is Nintendo’s company-reported launch figure, not evidence that retailers marked down the original Switch. The release also notes that the total included specified Japan-only system variants and the Mario Kart World set: Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 sales announcement.

How to verify a Switch deal before buying

  1. Identify the exact console. Confirm whether the listing is for the standard Switch, Lite, or OLED model, and whether it is new, refurbished, or used.
  2. Compare the full checkout price. Include required games, accessories, memberships, shipping, and taxes where applicable; note what is actually included.
  3. Check the offer details. Confirm the retailer, country, stock, promotion dates, return policy, and warranty. Save the dated listing if you need to substantiate a historical price claim.
  4. Compare like with like. Use another listing for the same model, condition, and bundle. A lower price for a different configuration does not demonstrate a markdown on the console you want.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
