Nintendo raised its forecast for Switch hardware sales to 15.5 million units for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, from 15 million. The change followed 13.74 million units sold in the first nine months, ended December 31, 2023—a 7.8% decline from a year earlier. The revised figure was a full-year forecast, not a result already achieved.

GamesBeat reported that Nintendo beat December-quarter expectations; Nintendo’s February 6, 2024 release provides the official nine-month results and forecast context. These are historical figures, not current Nintendo guidance.

What Nintendo reported for the nine months ended December 31, 2023

In its February 6, 2024 release, Nintendo reported higher year-on-year results across its main consolidated profit measures. The company’s reported figures and changes from the comparable prior-year period were:

Measure Nine-month result Change year on year
Net sales ¥1,394,796 million Up 7.7%
Operating profit ¥464,410 million Up 13.1%
Ordinary profit ¥567,357 million Up 17.6%
Profit attributable to owners of the parent ¥408,041 million Up 17.9%

The period covered the first nine months of Nintendo’s fiscal year, not just the December quarter. Nintendo also reported 13.74 million Switch hardware units sold, down 7.8% year on year, and 163.95 million software units, down 4.7%. It described hardware sales as steady in the console’s seventh year.

Why the Switch forecast rose to 15.5 million

Nintendo’s revised target was 15.5 million Switch hardware units for the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, up from its previous 15 million forecast. The nine-month total of 13.74 million was an actual result through December 31; the 15.5 million figure was a forecast for the full year. Nintendo’s forecast notice documents the revision, while GamesBeat reported the prior target and the expectation-beating December-quarter framing.

The forecast increase came despite year-on-year declines in nine-month hardware and software sales. It was a modest upward adjustment to the full-year hardware outlook, not a claim that sales had already reached 15.5 million.

Games and digital sales supported the platform business

Nintendo pointed to several major releases and enduring titles in its account of the period. Its reported sales for the nine months included:

  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder: 11.96 million copies.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: 20.28 million copies.
  • Pikmin 4: 3.33 million copies.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 6.79 million copies during the period, bringing cumulative sales to 60.58 million.

Nintendo said the Super Mario Bros. Movie had a positive effect on sales of Mario-related titles, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. That is the company’s explanation of the connection, rather than an independently measured causal finding.

Digital sales were ¥346.4 billion, up 11.7% year on year. Nintendo attributed the growth to downloadable packaged software, add-on content, Nintendo Switch Online-related sales, and yen depreciation.

What “beat expectations” means here

Nintendo’s official release establishes its reported results; it does not establish analyst consensus. GamesBeat’s contemporaneous report is the source for the claim that the December-quarter results beat expectations and for its comparison with analyst expectations. That quarterly comparison should not be confused with Nintendo’s nine-month totals or its full-year hardware forecast.

These numbers are historical, not current guidance

The 15.5 million target applied to the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. As of October 8, 2026, Nintendo’s investor-relations page pointed to results for the fiscal year ending March 2027 and listed a November 5, 2026 six-month earnings release. The 2024 forecast should not be read as Nintendo’s current outlook.
