It is designed to quantify environmental results from participating U.S. farms and generate credits that buyers can use toward climate or water goals. But the launch did not mean every farm was eligible, and the available information does not establish a standard payment per acre or a typical farmer’s earnings.
What the market is—and what changed since 2019
A March 6, 2019 Successful Farming report described ESMC as a consortium forming a national market, with 2022 as its target launch date. It said the proposed system would quantify environmental outcomes from farm practices, issue credits and let companies buy them toward climate or water goals. The report named ten participating companies and nonprofits, including General Mills, ADM, Cargill, McDonald’s and The Nature Conservancy. These were plans and participants reported at the time, not proof of present-day membership or operations.
ESMC and the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) announced Eco-Harvest’s launch on May 17, 2022. Their announcement described an end-to-end digitized platform intended to generate third-party-verified credits for soil-carbon removals, avoided and reduced greenhouse-gas emissions, and water impacts from U.S. farms. The announcement set a target of operating in every region and major production system by the end of 2025; a target is not confirmation that coverage was completed.
How farmers’ environmental results become credits
ESMC’s producer portal describes Eco-Harvest as outcome-based: it focuses on measured results rather than requiring one particular farming practice. Its listed credit categories include increased soil carbon, reduced greenhouse gases and water quality. Some projects may also generate water-quantity or biodiversity credits. The program describes field-scale quantification and says credits may be stacked or disaggregated, meaning a project’s outcomes can be combined or represented separately.

For soil analysis, the portal says ESMC coordinates sampling and sends samples to contracted laboratories. The 2019 report also described a plan to reduce verification costs using advanced analytics and remote sensing while retaining soil measurements. That report does not establish the methods or costs in use today; current program details should be confirmed with ESMC.
Who can participate and what enrollment involves
Eco-Harvest participation is not described as universally available. ESMC says market-scale projects operate only in regions and production systems where program buildout is complete. Farmers should confirm local eligibility, covered outcomes and current terms with the program before making farm or financial decisions.

The producer portal describes five-year enrollment contracts, no program fees, and no requirement to purchase particular inputs or subscriptions. Those statements describe the portal’s program terms; they do not establish what any individual farmer will earn or how every project’s payment is calculated.
What farmers may be paid—and what is not established
The basic model is that a buyer purchases credits tied to environmental outcomes, while participating producers may be compensated for contributing those outcomes. ESMC’s 2019 description emphasized incentives for farmers, and the 2022 launch announcement described credits generated from farm results. Neither source supplies a universal credit price, per-acre payment or expected farmer income. The producer portal information summarized here also does not specify a payment formula or amount. A farmer should request current, project-specific terms—including how payment is calculated and when it is made—rather than treating participation as a predictable income stream.

The announcement establishes the organization’s stated direction; it does not establish transaction volumes, realized prices or independently verified market-wide environmental effects.

ESMC’s May 2022 launch announcement reported that FFAR awarded the consortium a $10.3 million grant in 2019 and that ESMC and its members matched it, for a reported total of $20.6 million in research and development investment. The same announcement set an enrollment target of up to 500,000 acres. That figure was a target, not a reported enrollment result.
