Nike’s European Logistics Campus in Belgium combines waterborne freight, automated high-bay storage and lower-impact groundskeeping to support distribution across Europe. The design explains how the site is intended to work efficiently; the published sources do not quantify a productivity gain attributable to any one feature.
What Nike’s Belgian campus does
Nike described the expanded European Logistics Campus in a May 26, 2016 announcement as a centralized distribution network serving Nike.com, Nike retail and wholesale partners from one inventory location. At that time, Nike said the campus served 38 countries. The company framed the expansion as a way to support an agile supply chain, noting that it shipped more than one billion units of footwear, apparel and equipment globally each year. Nike’s 2016 announcement
A later snapshot gives a different dated picture, not a conflicting timeless total: on June 7, 2023, the Belgian Prime Minister’s office reported that more than one million sports goods shipped daily from Laakdal to 39 countries. It also reported 7,000 permanent employees, rising to 8,000 during peak periods. These are figures from that government visit report, not guaranteed current totals. How canals change the inbound freight mix
The campus is connected to canals, railways and highways. In Nike’s 2016 account, 99% of inbound containers reached the local container park by water rather than road, avoiding 14,000 truck journeys a year. The Belgian government’s 2023 account also described waterborne inbound containers as replacing about 14,000 annual truck trips. The figure is attributed reporting, not an independently audited current count. Nike, 2016; Belgian Prime Minister’s office, 2023

Nike’s later transport work should be kept distinct from the 2016 expansion story. The company says H₂ Barge 1 launched in 2023 with Future Proof Shipping, hydrogen provider Air Liquide and inland-terminal network BCTN; it sails between Rotterdam and the European Logistics Campus. What the robot cranes and building structure do
An architecture-sector description from Bouwen aan Vlaanderen says robot cranes serve storage racks 40 metres high. The account also says the cranes’ braking energy is reused elsewhere in the building, while the racks carry the façade and roof. In other words, storage infrastructure is integrated into the building rather than treated as a separate system. The source does not quantify throughput, labour savings or energy saved by the crane system. Bouwen aan Vlaanderen

New Atlas reported the 2016 expansion at 150,000 square metres (about 1.6 million square feet), serving online, retail and wholesale customers across 38 countries. That is a secondary report of the expanded campus at the time, not a verified present-day footprint. New Atlas, June 6, 2016
Why Nike mentioned sheep, beehives and renewable energy
Nike’s May 2016 launch announcement said sheep would naturally maintain the landscaping, while on-site beehives would contribute to pollination and biodiversity. These were described as site-management intentions; the release did not report measured biodiversity results. Nike, 2016

The same announcement said the campus used 100% renewable energy from five locally generated sources: wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric and biomass. Nike said six on-site wind turbines could generate electricity equivalent to the needs of 5,000 households, and that solar panels covered an area the size of three soccer fields. These are company-reported launch figures, not current operating measurements. Nike also said more than 95% of on-site waste was recycled and that employee pathways used recycled footwear material. Nike, 2016
How the campus fits Nike’s later freight efforts
Nike’s current value-chain reporting puts the Laakdal campus within a wider corporate logistics picture. The company reports that it has reduced inbound air freight by nearly 85% since 2020 and that air freight represented 0.6% of inbound volume in FY25. Those figures are company-wide, not campus-only measures. Nike also says that in FY25 it participated in six logistics couriers’ sustainable ocean-fuel programs, matching an equivalent volume of 28% of its global inbound ocean shipments. It makes an ideal present for construction enthusiasts of any age.
What “boosts efficiency” means here
The campus’s efficiency case rests on design mechanisms: canals shift much inbound container movement away from roads; robot cranes access very tall storage; and the storage racks double as part of the building structure. Sheep, beehives, renewable-energy systems and waste practices address the site’s environmental management. Nike’s statements describe aims and features, while the later government report gives an operating snapshot. The cited sources do not establish a measured before-and-after fulfilment or productivity improvement caused by these features.
