Yes, in some cases—but there is no single Canadian fishing licence, and the rules depend on where and how you plan to fish. Choose the province or territory, waterbody, species and dates first. Then check whether you need a freshwater, tidal-water or national-park permit, and whether the relevant system lets you buy it online before you travel.
Start with the destination, not a Canada-wide licence
Canada directs recreational anglers to the licensing rules for the province or territory where they will fish. A licence for one jurisdiction or type of water should not be assumed to cover another. A U.S. visitor should check the official rules for each planned location and trip date, including whether the water is freshwater, tidal or inside a national park.
Residency categories also matter. For example, Ontario defines a non-Canadian resident as someone who is neither an Ontario resident nor a Canadian resident. Do not assume that every province uses the same category, age rules or purchase options.
How advance purchase works in the examples covered here
| Destination and water | Advance-purchase route | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario recreational fishing | Online options include an eight-day licence. A one-day sport licence is also available without an Outdoors Card. | Most non-Canadian residents need an Outdoors Card and a recreational licence. Ontario says the Licence Summary supplied at purchase can be used immediately while the plastic card is mailed. |
| British Columbia freshwater | Buy through the WILD online system, or in person at FrontCounter BC, Service BC or a licence vendor. | Licensed fishing guides and permit-to-accompany holders can buy for non-residents. Confirm that a guide or vendor handles the licence type you need before relying on them. |
| British Columbia tidal waters | Non-residents can use the National Recreational Licensing System (NRLS) or an Independent Access Provider (IAP). | For halibut in Areas 121, 23 or 123, a non-resident must buy through an IAP in Canada; an online licence does not authorize that fishing. |
| National-park waters | Check the particular park’s Parks Canada instructions; some permits can be booked through its reservation system. | A provincial licence does not replace a required national-park fishing permit. Rules and purchase arrangements differ by park. |
What a British Columbia tidal licence costs in 2026/2027
Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Pacific Region fee schedule lists these charges for non-residents fishing B.C. tidal waters in 2026/2027. Fees exclude GST; these are not Canada-wide prices. Confirm the amount at purchase.

| Licence or stamp | Fee | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Annual tidal-water licence | $124.41 | Annual licences run April 1 through March 31. |
| Five-day tidal-water licence | $38.18 | Non-resident fee; GST excluded. |
| Three-day tidal-water licence | $23.40 | Non-resident fee; GST excluded. |
| One-day tidal-water licence | $8.62 | Non-resident fee; GST excluded. |
| Annual salmon conservation stamp | $7.39 | Required if salmon is retained. |
The correct licence and any required stamp depend on the water and species. No Canada-wide visitor licence price is established by these examples, so do not use a B.C. fee to estimate a trip elsewhere.
Check permits, species and local rules before paying
A licence authorizes only what its rules cover; it does not settle every question about a fishing trip. Before buying, check the current season, open or closed areas, species rules, catch limits and any required stamp or validation for the exact waterbody.

National parks are a separate check. Parks Canada says park waters can require a national-park fishing permit, and a provincial licence is not valid in place of that permit. For example, Jasper’s stated 2026–2027 rules allow a person under 16 to fish without their own permit when accompanied by a permit holder aged 16 or older; the younger angler’s catch counts against the permit holder’s limit. La Mauricie describes daily permits booked through the Parks Canada reservation system. Check the page for the specific park and planned date rather than applying one park’s conditions elsewhere.

In Ontario, anglers must carry a valid Outdoors Card and Licence Summary unless the licence is printed on the back of the Outdoors Card. Ontario accepts digital or printed copies as described in its licensing information. Its regulations summary specifies that a mobile Licence Summary must be the PDF supplied through the licensing service: a photo or screenshot is not valid. Follow the document instructions for the jurisdiction where you are fishing, and make sure you can access the required proof during the trip.

A practical purchase checklist
- Map the itinerary. Identify every province or territory, waterbody, species and fishing date. If you will cross jurisdictions or fish more than one kind of water, check each separately.
- Choose the licence setting. Determine whether the water is freshwater, tidal or within a national park, and check the correct official licensing authority.
- Confirm your category and duration. Check how the jurisdiction defines a non-resident, whether age affects the requirement, and which licence duration and purchase channel fit your trip.
- Check add-ons and restrictions. Confirm any conservation stamp or validation, season, area rules and catch limits before you pay.
- Save the issued proof. Download the official document or print it if accepted, and follow the jurisdiction’s exact carrying rules.
- Recheck close to departure. If your dates, itinerary or target species change, verify that your licence and the current regulations still cover the new plan.
