That is what Tad Friend reported Altman saying—not a verified inventory, and not evidence of what Altman owns today.
What did Sam Altman say he had for doomsday?
In Tad Friend’s October 3, 2016 profile of Altman for The New Yorker, Altman described several possible disasters: a lethal synthetic virus, AI that attacks people, and nuclear conflict over scarce resources. Friend reported Altman saying:
“I try not to think about it too much,” Altman said. “But I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israeli Defense Force, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to.”
The quote appears in Friend’s 2016 profile, “Sam Altman’s Manifest Destiny”. It is reported speech in a profile, not an independently verified inventory or a recommendation of what readers should buy. The passage does not establish whether Altman still has any of those items.

Why the anecdote is not a current inventory
The profile captures a remark made in 2016 and attributes it to Altman. It does not document the items, establish their condition or suitability, or confirm that the Big Sur property was a bunker. In particular, Friend’s wording—“gas masks from the Israeli Defense Force”—does not identify a model or establish any certification or protective capability.
How Altman described the prepper label later
In a June 21, 2023 TIME interview, the interviewer asked Altman about reports that he was a doomsday prepper. He responded that the portrayal had been “caricatured very wildly,” called survivalism an interesting hobby, and said it was not something he spent serious time or effort on. He also said, “if AGI goes wrong, no bunker’s going to help anyone,” and characterized a bunker as irrelevant to that risk.

Altman’s later comments offer his own characterization of the earlier story; they do not verify or retract the 2016 list. The TIME interview also records him describing himself as optimistic while prepared for things to go badly.
