Oliver Tarvet’s Wimbledon prize money was not the same as the amount he could personally keep while maintaining college eligibility. In June 2025, the University of San Diego student said the applicable rules allowed him $10,000 in annual profit from professional tennis, plus expenses incurred at events. Wimbledon’s published award was therefore not proof that he could retain the full amount as unrestricted income.
Why Tarvet’s Wimbledon award and personal take-home amount differed
Tarvet came through qualifying to reach the 2025 Wimbledon men’s singles main draw. BBC Sport reported that he was studying at the University of San Diego and had developed as a player in the NCAA system. Tarvet described the relevant limit as $10,000 in profit per year, with event expenses treated separately. That is a contemporaneous account of what he said about his situation, not a newly verified statement of the full current NCAA rulebook. BBC Sport reported Tarvet’s explanation on 27 June 2025.
The distinction is between profit he could keep and expenses he might be able to recover under the rules. An expense allowance is not automatically extra profit: it concerns costs incurred in competing, while the annual profit limit concerns money left over. The available reporting does not show which of Tarvet’s expenses were ultimately approved or how much he personally received.
What Wimbledon listed for the 2025 singles draw
Wimbledon’s official 2025 schedule set the following awards for men’s and women’s singles:

| 2025 singles result | Wimbledon award | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| First round | £66,000 | The tournament’s published award for reaching that round; it does not establish Tarvet’s personal take-home amount. |
| Second round | £99,000 | The tournament’s published award for reaching that round; it does not establish how much a college athlete could retain. |
These are gross tournament award figures, not evidence that the same sums were available to Tarvet as unrestricted personal income. Wimbledon’s 2025 prize-money announcement lists the round awards.
What Tarvet said after reaching round two
After winning his first-round match, Tarvet joked about the expenses he might need to document. BBC Sport quoted him on 1 July 2025: “I’ve got to find £60,000, £70,000 of expenses, tennis is an expensive sport.” The remark illustrates the difference between an award and expenses that might be relevant under eligibility rules; it does not establish that he actually incurred, claimed, or received approval for those costs. BBC Sport’s 1 July 2025 report gives the quote.

What the NCAA’s later clarification does—and does not—settle
On 15 April 2026, the NCAA announced a change to prospect prize-money rules and said it did not change the longstanding rules regarding prize money after collegiate enrollment. That later statement is useful context for distinguishing prospects from enrolled athletes, but it does not determine Tarvet’s individual 2025 accounting or final payment. The NCAA’s April 2026 announcement addresses the prospect-rule change.
A historical NCAA Division I legislative record describes a $10,000-per-calendar-year profit exception before full-time collegiate enrollment, with additional event prize money limited to actual and necessary expenses. Because that record concerns a pre-enrollment exception, it should not be treated as a complete statement of the post-enrollment rules applicable to Tarvet. The NCAA legislative database record provides that historical proposal context.

How much was Tarvet ultimately allowed to receive?
The available sources establish neither Tarvet’s final approved expense reimbursements nor what happened to any balance beyond the amount he could retain under the eligibility limits he described. They also do not establish that Wimbledon withheld his award or that he received nothing. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the tournament announced a round award, while college eligibility rules affected what Tarvet could personally keep.
