That was a company forecast—not a final sales result. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the target was based on the original Switch’s sales over roughly its first 10 months, while acknowledging that Switch 2’s higher price could make early adoption more challenging. Best Buy’s related midnight openings took place on June 5, 2025, and are now past events.
What was Nintendo’s Switch 2 sales forecast?
In its May 8, 2025 financial results, Nintendo forecast 15 million Switch 2 hardware sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. Nintendo identified June 5, 2025, as the console’s release date. The 15 million figure was a forecast, not a report of sales achieved. Nintendo’s financial results placed it within the company’s broader financial outlook and cautioned that forecasts depend on management assumptions and market conditions. Nintendo also said its outlook assumed U.S. tariff rates effective April 10, 2025, would remain in place through that fiscal year; changes could affect the forecast.

Why did Nintendo set a 15 million-unit target?
In a May 14, 2025 report, HotHardware attributed an explanation to Furukawa during a conference-call Q&A: Nintendo aimed to match the original Switch’s sales over the roughly 10-month period from its March 2017 launch through December that year. This was a comparison of launch-period sales, not a claim that the two consoles had identical market conditions. HotHardware’s report quoted Furukawa saying the target was set with the aim of reaching that level.
Price was a possible early-adoption challenge
Furukawa also recognized that Switch 2 was priced relatively high compared with the original Switch and that this could present challenges to early adoption. The remark was part of his reported explanation of the forecast; it does not establish how much the price would affect sales.

What did Nintendo report after launch?
On June 11, 2025, Nintendo said Switch 2 had sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days after release. Nintendo described that as the highest global first-four-day sales level for any Nintendo hardware at that time. Nintendo’s release reported an early launch result; it is not the final total for the fiscal year or proof that the 15 million-unit forecast was met.

Best Buy announced on May 29, 2025, that nearly all its U.S. stores would open at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 5 for preorder pickup and limited walk-in purchases of consoles, games, and accessories. The walk-in opportunity was limited, so the announcement did not guarantee a console for customers without a preorder. The timing was specified in Eastern Time; the announcement does not establish the arrangement for stores outside the United States.
