Nintendo says it raised the U.S. Nintendo Switch 2’s suggested retail price because of several longer-term market pressures—not because game development costs rose. The U.S. MSRP moves from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. Nintendo cited memory and other component prices, foreign-exchange trends, and oil prices; it discussed longer development times and larger game files separately, as factors relevant to software pricing.
When does the Switch 2 price increase take effect?
Nintendo of America announced on May 7, 2026 that the U.S. system MSRP would rise by $50, from $449.99 to $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. The listed price is an MSRP, not a guarantee that every retailer will charge that amount. U.S. prices exclude tax. Nintendo of America’s price-change notice

Why is the Switch 2 getting more expensive?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the hardware revision reflects several market changes that the company expects to affect its dedicated game platform business over the medium to long term. He named surging memory and other component prices, foreign-exchange trends, and oil prices. Nintendo said it decided to reflect some of those costs in selling prices after concluding that keeping hardware prices unchanged could significantly damage hardware profitability. The size of the revision differs by region because market conditions affect regions differently. Nintendo FY2026 financial results Q&A
Furukawa summarized the decision this way: “This change in hardware pricing was not due to any one specific factor.” Nintendo’s translated statement

That explanation describes a combination of cost and market pressures; Nintendo has not given a single cause or published a specific hardware price-increase percentage in the cited Q&A.
Did Nintendo raise the hardware price because game development costs are rising?
No. Nintendo’s remarks about longer development periods and larger game files concern software pricing, not the later Switch 2 hardware revision. In its FY2025 Q&A, Furukawa said hardware pricing takes account of manufacturing costs, what consumers perceive as an acceptable price, exchange rates, and regional market conditions. Separately, he said software prices can reflect increases tied to larger game files and longer development periods. Nintendo FY2025 financial results Q&A

In a later answer about future software development and release cadence, Furukawa said, “it’s true that software development time has increased compared to before.” Nintendo’s translated statement That comment helps explain the software-cost discussion, but it is not Nintendo’s stated reason for raising the console’s price.

Nintendo acknowledged that the revised hardware price makes the purchase harder to justify for some consumers. Asked whether it could affect sales momentum amid cost-of-living pressure, Furukawa declined to quantify the specific sales effect. He said, “we recognize that this raises the barrier for entry to a certain extent for people deciding whether to make a purchase.” Nintendo FY2026 financial results Q&A
Nintendo also said future component prices remain uncertain and that it would prepare to respond flexibly. Its answer does not establish that another increase is planned, nor does it quantify how many buyers may delay or forgo a purchase.
Quick Recap
How to interpret the announced price
- For U.S. shoppers, $499.99 is Nintendo’s stated system MSRP from September 1, 2026, before tax; check the retailer’s current listing for the actual price.
- For international comparisons, confirm the market, system variant, effective date, tax treatment, and whether a figure is an MSRP or a store-specific listing.
- Keep the two cost explanations distinct: component, currency, and oil pressures were cited in the hardware-price discussion; development time and larger game files were discussed in relation to software pricing.
