The $8 Netflix charge was the rounded US price announced in May 2023 for adding someone outside your household. It is not the current ad-free price: as of October 8, 2026, Netflix lists US extra-member slots at $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 without ads. The account owner pays, and the fee applies only when the owner buys and activates an extra-member slot—not automatically to every account.
What Netflix’s $8 announcement meant
On May 23, 2023, Netflix announced that it was contacting US subscribers who shared accounts outside their household. Netflix’s wording was: “A Netflix account is for use by one household.” Netflix’s announcement introduced the paid extra-member option in the United States at $7.99 per month. That historical price is the source of the commonly cited “$8” figure; it should not be mistaken for today’s ad-free rate.

Netflix defines a household around the main place where the subscriber watches. Its Help Center says a Netflix Household consists of devices connected to the internet at that location. Netflix identifies devices using the internet connection, device IDs and account activity, and says it does not use GPS to determine their precise physical location. A member can update the household from a TV. Netflix’s Household help page explains the setup.
Current US extra-member prices and plan limits
Netflix’s US-dollar price listing, accessed October 8, 2026, shows these monthly prices. They are listed before any applicable tax; packages, billing partners and account-specific terms may affect price or eligibility. Netflix’s Plans and Pricing page is the place to check the current offer for an account.

These are US-dollar prices listed by Netflix, not a universal price schedule. If Netflix is billed through a provider or included in a package, confirm the terms with that provider and the owner’s account. Netflix says some partner-billed accounts and packages cannot use extra members; in some package arrangements, the extra-member fee may be paid directly to Netflix using a secondary payment method. Netflix’s Extra Members page describes restrictions and billing.
What an extra member gets—and what they do not
The account owner purchases and manages the slot. The invited person receives a separate Netflix account, password and profile; an existing profile may be transferred during setup. This is not simply an extra profile added to the owner’s account. The extra member can watch away from the owner’s home, but Netflix limits the membership to one profile and one supported device at a time. The extra member must live in the same country where the owner signed up.

The ad-supported extra-member option has further limits: Netflix lists 1080p video, downloads on one device, and up to 15 downloads per calendar month. Check the account’s current terms before choosing a tier, especially if the member wants downloads, simultaneous devices or an ad-free experience.

Compare the extra-member charge with the cost of the separate plan the other person would actually choose—not with a general assumption that sharing is always cheaper. The extra-member fee is charged to the owner, while the invited person gets separate credentials and a limited membership. A separate subscription may provide a different plan or limits, but its price depends on the person’s country, plan, taxes and billing terms. Netflix’s published prices and feature restrictions do not establish one option as cheaper for every household.

- Check whether the owner has Standard or Premium and an unused slot; Standard allows one extra member and Premium allows up to two.
- Decide whether the invited member wants ads, then compare the applicable extra-member price with the current price of that person’s preferred standalone plan.
- Account for the one-profile, one-device-at-a-time and same-country restrictions, as well as any download limits.
- Verify package or third-party billing eligibility before planning around an extra-member slot.
