Netflix announced on March 24, 2022, that Boss Fight Entertainment was joining the company as it expanded its in-house game-development capacity. Boss Fight’s current company history says it is “now back to operating independently in 2026.” The official sources reviewed do not explain when or on what terms that change happened.
What Netflix announced in 2022
Netflix said Boss Fight would join its growing group of game studios. The company presented the move as a way to build its internal development capacity and help create games for Netflix members. Netflix Games executive Amir Rahimi said the studio’s experience across genres would help Netflix offer members games wherever they wanted to play them.
Boss Fight was founded in 2013 by David Rippy, Bill Jackson, and Scott Winsett. At the time of the announcement, Netflix identified Rippy as CEO, Jackson as CCO, and Winsett as COO. The studio was headquartered in Allen, Texas, and Netflix said the team would continue operating from studios in Allen (Dallas), Austin, and Seattle. Netflix’s March 24, 2022 announcement described the studio’s mission as making games people could enjoy wherever they chose to play.
How the deal fit Netflix’s games strategy
Netflix’s rationale was about creative capacity and its games offering, not a disclosed purchase price or a promised financial return. In its Q2 2022 shareholder letter, Netflix listed Boss Fight alongside Night School Studios and Next Games as acquisitions that added expertise in multiple geographies and expanded internal development capacity. That provides context for the company’s strategy at the time, but does not establish what Netflix paid or how the Boss Fight deal performed. What happened to Boss Fight after the acquisition?
Boss Fight Entertainment’s current company history says it was “acquired by Netflix in 2022, and now back to operating independently in 2026.” That is the clearest official statement of its current status in the sources reviewed: Boss Fight says it is independent again.
The company history does not give a separation date or explain the terms of the change. It also does not say whether Netflix retains any rights or interests, so those details should not be inferred. Boss Fight’s updates page records founder Bill Jackson appearing on a Netflix Games panel on March 19, 2025, but that appearance alone does not establish the studio’s ownership at that time or explain its later return to independent operation.
