The New York Times Company acquired Listen In Audio, Inc.—the company behind Audm—in the first quarter of 2020. Audm was a subscription service that turned journalism articles into audio, with professional voice actors narrating stories. The Times later launched a separate audio destination, but available sources do not establish that Audm’s full catalog or service carried over unchanged.
What Audm did
Audm made long-form journalism available to listen to rather than read. The New York Times Company described it in its 2020 Form 10-K as a subscription product that “transforms long-form journalism into audio.” The company’s 2020 Form 10-K, filed in 2021, identifies Audm as one of the businesses it acquired.
Contemporaneous reporting described Audm’s narration as the work of professional voice actors, rather than automated voice technology. That human-narrated approach distinguished the product at the time; it should not be assumed to describe every later audio product from The Times. TechCrunch reported the acquisition on March 23, 2020.
When and what the Times acquired
The Times announced the transaction in its annual report as a first-quarter 2020 acquisition of Listen In Audio, Inc. The filing says it was an all-cash transaction. TechCrunch also reported the deal on March 23, 2020. The Form 10-K records $5.8 million allocated to goodwill and $2.7 million to intangible assets. Those are accounting allocations, not a disclosed total purchase price.

The available reporting establishes that the Times developed a later audio offering, but does not establish that all Audm articles, publisher relationships, narrators, or features moved into it. Nor does it settle Audm’s precise shutdown or migration date, or whether Audm remains available as a standalone app. Readers looking for a particular archived article should check its availability in the current Times audio service rather than assume a complete migration.

The filing’s $5.8 million goodwill allocation and $2.7 million intangible-asset allocation are not the purchase price. The sources reviewed do not disclose the total price, Audm’s subscriber count, or an Audm-specific listener or download figure. The Times separately reported that The Daily had 1.25 billion downloads in 2020; that company-reported figure concerns The Daily, not Audm, and should not be treated as an Audm audience metric. The Times’ 2020 annual report provides that broader audio context.

How to understand the later Times audio service
Audm’s acquisition-era proposition was focused: listen to journalism articles narrated by professional voice actors. New York Times Audio is documented as a broader destination encompassing podcasts and shorter audio alongside narrated journalism. The sources do not provide enough detail to make a complete catalog-by-catalog comparison or confirm that the later service retained Audm’s full archive.
