Family farms made up 95% of U.S. farms in the 2022 Census of Agriculture farm typology, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported in 2025. That figure counts farms—not acres or the value of what they produce. USDA separately reported that family-owned and operated farms operated 84% of U.S. farmland in the 2022 Census results.
What USDA means by a family farm
In the NASS 2022 Census farm typology, a family farm is one in which the producer and people related to the producer own a majority of the business. The definition is about ownership; it does not require that every worker or asset be supplied by family members. The typology also classifies farms by gross cash farm income (GCFI), which includes crop and livestock sales, production-contract fees, government payments, and farm-related income. NASS’s 2022 Farm Typology report explains the categories.
USDA’s farm count is broader than a count of large commercial operations. The Census is a complete count and includes qualifying small rural or urban plots. USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) describes a farm as a place that produced and sold, or normally would have produced and sold, at least $1,000 of agricultural products, or met its stated condition involving government payments and sales. ERS’s farm-structure overview gives its definition and context.
Farm count, land, and production value are different measures
The 95% figure answers how many farms were classified as family farms in the 2022 NASS typology. It does not mean those farms controlled 95% of the land or generated 95% of production value. The 2022 Census results separately show family-owned and operated farms operating 84% of U.S. farmland. NASS’s February 2024 release reports that land figure.

Production value was concentrated differently by farm size in the NASS 2022 typology:
| Farm category | Share of all farms | Share of value of agricultural products sold |
|---|---|---|
| Small family farms | 85% | 14% |
| Midsize family farms | 6% | 16% |
| Large-scale family farms | 4% | 51% |
These are shares reported in NASS’s 2022 Census farm-typology highlights. The categories shown do not add up to all farms because the table lists family-farm size groups, not every farm type. The contrast is the key: small family farms were numerous, while large-scale family farms accounted for a much larger share of product value.

Why a later USDA page says 97%
USDA ERS reports that family farms were 97% of U.S. farms in 2024, based on its ERS typology and Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) data. That estimate appears on an ERS page updated June 2, 2026; it is not a revised 2022 Census result. ERS’s definition also centers on majority ownership by the operator and related individuals, with “related” including blood, marriage, or adoption, and is specific to its analysis program. ERS’s farm-structure page describes the series.
The 95% NASS figure and 97% ERS figure refer to different reference years and statistical products. The difference by itself does not show that the share rose over time or that either estimate is an error. Keep each percentage attached to its source and year rather than combining them into a trend.

ERS’s 2024 estimates provide another view of the difference between farm count and economic scale. Under the ERS threshold of GCFI below $350,000, small family farms accounted for 86% of farms and 17% of production value. In the same ERS series, family farms accounted for 97% of farms, operated 91% of agricultural land, and generated 85% of total production value. These are ERS figures for 2024, reported in 2026—not NASS’s 2022 Census measures. The ERS chart note provides the figures and classifications.

“Nearly all” refers to the share of farms by count: 95% in USDA NASS’s 2022 Census farm typology. It should not be read as a claim that family farms account for the same share of farmland or production. For those questions, use the separately reported land and production-value measures and keep their data year and USDA product attached.
