National Fun at Work Day 2025 fell on Friday, January 31. The unofficial observance is commonly marked on the last Friday in January, offering teams a chance to connect through simple, optional activities—not a promise of higher productivity or a requirement to throw a party.
When is National Fun at Work Day?
In 2025, it was Friday, January 31, according to AvloHR’s 2025 employee-awareness calendar. The commonly used recurring convention is the last Friday in January; the City of Ellisville’s notice gives an example of that convention. The date changes each year.
This is an unofficial observance, not a government holiday. A definitive founder or origin has not been established; National Day Calendar says it is still researching the origin.
Why might a workplace mark it?
The practical case is modest: a shared, enjoyable moment can give coworkers an opportunity to connect. That does not mean the date itself has a proven business effect. The sources reviewed do not establish that celebrating National Fun at Work Day causes higher productivity, lower absenteeism, or better retention.

National Day Calendar quotes the authors of 301 Ways to Have Fun at Work, Dave Hemseth and Leslie Yerkes, as saying that organizations integrating fun have lower absenteeism, greater job satisfaction, increased productivity, and less downtime. That is an attributed statement reproduced by the calendar, not a verified statistic or evidence specific to this observance.
How to celebrate without making it awkward
Keep the activity easy to join and easy to decline. In 2025 guidance, workplace practitioner Kathy Klotz-Guest advised: “Keep it fun, light, optional, autonomous and safe.” That is practical advice, not a formal workplace standard.

- The Office meets UNO for this unique card game.
- This collectible deck features graphics from the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company show everyone loves to binge-watch.
- Whoever drops all their cards LAST has to draw two cards with the Kevin's Famous Chili rule!
- Match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile and use wild and penalty cards to trip up the competition!
- Great for kid, teen or adult game night for 2 to 10 players ages 7 years an older.
- Share food: A potluck, treats, or an ice-cream break can be a low-key way to gather. A University of Maine policy-center post described staff marking the 2025 day with an ice-cream event.
- Offer a short game: Ellisville lists games and awards among possible ideas. Keep the activity brief, and avoid putting anyone on the spot.
- Recognize colleagues: If your team enjoys awards, make them welcoming rather than competitive or based on personal traits.
- Let people choose: Make participation voluntary and provide a straightforward way to opt out without explanation.
These are suggestions, not requirements. There is no need to spend money: a short break, a shared playlist, or a friendly team check-in can serve the same purpose if it suits the people involved.
What works for a remote or hybrid team?
Choose something that does not require everyone to be online at the same time, if schedules or time zones differ. A short optional video-call game or an asynchronous prompt can make participation more accessible than a mandatory live event. A 2023 gThankYou workplace calendar pointed readers to TeamBuilding.com for virtual team activities; that mention is historical and does not confirm current services or availability.
