Scopely, the maker of MONOPOLY GO!, completed its $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic’s games business on May 29, 2025. The portfolio included Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, the Campfire app and the Wayfarer service, along with Niantic’s games team.
Did Scopely buy Pokémon GO?
Yes. Scopely agreed to acquire Niantic’s games business in a transaction valued at $3.5 billion, announced by Savvy Games Group on March 12, 2025. Savvy announced the deal’s completion on May 29, 2025, so the acquisition is no longer pending. Savvy’s agreement announcement and completion announcement establish the announced terms and status.

What did the acquisition include?
The portfolio transferred to Scopely included three games, two related services and Niantic’s games team:
- Pokémon GO
- Pikmin Bloom
- Monster Hunter Now
- Campfire, a community app
- Wayfarer, the platform associated with reviewing and contributing real-world points of interest
- The Niantic games team
The completion notice confirms that the games, services and team joined Scopely’s portfolio. The transaction was for Niantic’s games business, not a stated acquisition of all of Niantic. Savvy’s closing notice lists the transferred portfolio.

How much did Scopely pay, and how large was the business?
Savvy Games Group stated that the transaction was valued at $3.5 billion. In its March 2025 announcement, Savvy also said the acquired games and apps had more than 30 million monthly active players and generated more than $1 billion in revenue during 2024. Those are company-reported figures in the deal announcement, not independently audited measurements established by the sources cited here. Savvy’s announcement also reported that Pokémon GO had more than 100 million unique players in 2024, reached over 190 countries and regions, and averaged more than 40 minutes of playtime a day. These are Savvy’s reported figures, not a separate assessment of the games’ financial or player performance.
Why did Scopely want Niantic’s games business?
Scopely’s pre-close explanation emphasized Niantic’s experience building mobile games around communities and real-world play. It said the acquired teams would continue developing and operating the apps and live events under longtime leaders Ed Wu and Kei Kawai. Scopely co-CEOs Javier Ferreira and Walter Driver said players could expect the games, apps and events to remain true to familiar experiences and be driven by the same development teams. That was the company’s stated intention in March 2025, not a guarantee that every future product decision would remain unchanged. How have the games performed under Scopely?
In a May 2026 account marking one year since the deal closed, Scopely reported growth and engagement measures across the portfolio. It said Monster Hunter Now had double-digit year-over-year growth, Pokémon GO engagement had increased 10%, Campfire participation had risen 85%, and Wayfarer daily active users had grown more than 20%. Scopely also said Pikmin Bloom ranked No. 1 on the App Store and Google Play in multiple Asian markets. The retrospective does not provide the measurement definitions, baselines or methodology behind those figures, so they should be read as Scopely’s own reported results rather than independently verified or directly comparable measures. Scopely’s one-year retrospective gives the company’s account of performance and integration.

The acquisition changed the business owner and brought Niantic’s games team and services into Scopely’s portfolio. Scopely’s later account described an integration approach focused on bringing teams together while preserving creative autonomy and supporting long-running live services. The company’s statements do not establish whether future prices, features, staffing or individual game roadmaps will change, or how specific players will be affected. They also do not independently verify the performance figures Scopely reported.

Scopely CRO and board member Tim O’Brien said the company was focused on listening and building in partnership with global partners including The Pokémon Company, Nintendo and Capcom. Scopely President, Games Ed Wu described games as relationships between the teams that create them and the communities around them. These are company representatives’ descriptions of Scopely’s approach, not independent assessments of the integration’s results. The retrospective contains both statements.
