New World: Aeternum’s final content release arrived amid Amazon’s October 28, 2025 layoffs, but Amazon did not say the layoffs caused the decision to end new content. Amazon Games said ongoing content support was no longer sustainable. The game is not yet shut down: its servers are scheduled to go offline on January 31, 2027.
What Amazon announced about New World
On October 28, 2025, Amazon Games said Season 10: Nighthaven would be the final content release for New World: Aeternum on PC and consoles. The company explained: “After four years of steady content updates and a major new console release, we’ve reached a point where it is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates.” Amazon Games’ October 28 announcement described the end of new content, not an immediate end to the game.

At the time, Amazon intended to keep servers online through 2026 and said it would give at least six months’ notice before any changes affecting players’ ability to play. Its October FAQ said the game was not being sunset “at this time.” Amazon later updated that timeline with a specific shutdown date.
Did Amazon’s layoffs cause the end of development?
The dates coincide, but the public statements do not establish that the layoffs caused the game-specific decision. On October 28, 2025, Amazon announced 14,000 job cuts company-wide. PC Gamer reported that Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president of audio, Twitch, and games, said the company would halt a significant amount of first-party AAA development work, specifically around MMOs, and make significant role reductions in studios in Irvine and San Diego and the central publishing team. PC Gamer’s report did not disclose how many Amazon Games employees were affected; 14,000 is the company-wide figure, not a New World or Amazon Games headcount.

The broader cuts and retreat from MMO work provide context for the timing. But Amazon’s announcement about New World gave a sustainability rationale and did not explicitly attribute the decision to layoffs. It is accurate to say new content ended amid Amazon’s cuts, not that Amazon confirmed the cuts directly caused it.

These are separate milestones: the end of new content did not itself shut down the servers, and delisting did not immediately end access for existing purchasers. The current official schedule is in Amazon Games’ January 15, 2026 update.

Can current owners still play or reinstall?
Yes. Existing purchasers can continue playing while the servers remain online and can download and install the game again. Amazon’s announced endpoint is January 31, 2027; after the game is taken offline, players will no longer be able to access it.

In-game purchases, including Marks of Fortune, stopped being available on July 20, 2026. Amazon says purchases of Marks of Fortune are not eligible for refunds. World bosses and bonus weeks were to continue until the announced shutdown date.
