It is Apple’s first store with extensive mass-timber construction, not a building made entirely of wood: the structure combines engineered timber with structural steel.
Where is Apple Miami Worldcenter, and when did it open?
The store is in downtown Miami’s Miami Worldcenter development. Apple announced its opening for January 24, 2025, and called it the company’s tenth store in Miami. Apple’s current U.S. store directory lists the location, confirming it is an operating store rather than a proposal.
Is the Apple Store made of wood?
Partly, and substantially—but “wooden Apple Store” is shorthand. Apple describes a regionally sourced mass-timber structure. Project contractor IW Mass Timber describes a hybrid system using galvanized structural-steel framing alongside mass-timber members. The available descriptions do not establish that every part of the building is wood.
What mass timber means
Mass timber refers to structural building components made from engineered wood products, rather than wood used only as a decorative finish. In this project, timber has a structural role, but it works with steel. Construction Specifier calls it Apple’s first store with extensive mass-timber construction, a distinction specific to Apple—not a claim that it is the first mass-timber retail building in the United States.

What the building looks like
Construction Specifier describes a curved perimeter roof, plaster walls, and an open central space entered through glazed openings. The design also incorporates a structural wood wall system, biomass-based terrazzo flooring, and attention to acoustics. Apple describes the store as biophilic, with planted areas connecting the building to its surroundings; coverage also notes a roof garden and landscaped public space.
What Apple says about the environmental impact
Apple says regionally sourced timber and other low-carbon materials significantly reduced the construction’s carbon intensity. The sources available do not provide a project-specific measured reduction, a timber volume or species, or an independently measured carbon audit. Regional sourcing and the use of engineered timber are relevant design choices, but the available information is not enough to quantify the building’s lifecycle emissions or compare them numerically with a steel- or concrete-led alternative.

IW Mass Timber reports that the project required coordination at steel-to-timber connections and adjustments to cantilever camber as the structure responded to moisture conditions. These are contractor-reported construction details, not a published independent assessment. The reviewed sources do not state the project’s construction cost or timber supply chain.
