MoviePass can be worth it if you go often, have a participating theater nearby, and can use credits for showtimes that cost less than your subscription would otherwise. It is not a set number of free movies each month: the fee and credit cost vary by location, and the credits come with limits. Before subscribing, compare your local plan and the credit prices for the showtimes you actually attend with the cost of buying those tickets directly.
How MoviePass works now
MoviePass is a paid monthly subscription that gives members credits to use toward movie tickets. The company’s subscription terms, revised March 19, 2025, list monthly fees from $10 to $40, but the available plans and credit amounts vary by location. MoviePass directs prospective members to check the options and showtime values in the app, so the posted range should not be read as a price available to every customer. Credits are not cash and cannot be redeemed for cash or gift cards. Unused credits roll over, up to twice your plan’s monthly allotment, and expire after two consecutive calendar months. The terms also allow MoviePass to change plan rules and benefits; review the current terms and in-app values before enrolling.
Where and how you can use it
MoviePass supports eTicket purchases at designated partner theaters and card purchases at theaters that accept Mastercard. For a card purchase, the terms describe a reservation that releases the required credits for a two-hour window. MoviePass says its network includes more than 4,000 theaters nationwide, a company-published figure; check the app to see whether your preferred theater is included and how it handles purchases.

The terms limit a plan to one regularly scheduled 2D ticket per day. MoviePass’s support page says IMAX and 3D tickets are excluded. The app includes a virtual card, and the company offers an optional physical branded card for an additional fee. Its signup guidance says eTicket users can start without waiting for the physical card. MoviePass support
Cancellation
MoviePass says you can cancel in the app or by contacting support. Its FAQ says an account remains active through the next scheduled billing date and any remaining credits can be used through that date. How to tell whether MoviePass is worth it for you
There is no universal break-even point because both plan pricing and credit costs vary by location. Do the comparison using the theater, days, and showtimes you expect to use—not a national price or a promised number of movies.
- Find your actual monthly fee and credit allowance. Check the plans shown for your location in the MoviePass app.
- Check the credit cost of likely showtimes. Look at the days, times, and theaters you usually choose; different showtimes may use different amounts of credit.
- Compare with direct ticket prices. Add up what those tickets would cost if purchased directly, including any low-cost showtimes or discount days you tend to use.
- Check the purchase method at your theater. Confirm whether you can buy an eTicket or need to use the card reservation process, and decide whether that process fits how you make plans.
- Account for the limits. Consider the one-ticket-per-day cap, 2D-only eligibility, credit expiry, and rollover limit against your moviegoing habits.
- Compare local alternatives. If a nearby theater offers its own membership, compare its current price, restrictions, and venue coverage with the MoviePass plan available to you.
In general, MoviePass is less likely to suit someone who goes only occasionally, mostly uses an inexpensive theater or discount day, or primarily watches premium-format movies. That is a practical inference from the subscription fee, variable credit costs, and format limit—not a measured estimate of what subscribers save.

What the savings claims can—and cannot—tell you
MoviePass’s plans page says members have saved more than $9.8 million at theaters since 2023. That is a company-published aggregate, and the page does not state the calculation method. It should not be treated as a prediction of your savings. The company also publishes testimonials, but those are selected by MoviePass rather than a representative survey. The available evidence does not establish a typical subscriber’s savings or how reliably the service works across markets. MoviePass plans

In 2021, the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint alleging that the former MoviePass operation misrepresented subscribers’ ability to see one movie per day or any movie at any theater at any time, and in numerous instances did not clearly disclose material subscription terms or obtain informed consent. The complaint also alleged failures to take reasonable measures to secure consumer data. These were allegations about the former operation; they do not establish how the relaunched service performs today. FTC complaint announcement
