The Pentagon’s June 2025 plan to cancel the Air Force’s E-7 Wedgetail program was real, but later budget and congressional actions sought to keep development moving. As of the July 2026 legislative text covered here, the program’s final funding and acquisition status remained unresolved: a funding request or proposed congressional requirement is not the same as enacted money or a production decision.
What happened to the E-7 Wedgetail program?
The Air Force’s fiscal year 2026 budget plan, announced in June 2025, called for canceling the E-7. In December 2025, however, the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act barred the use of FY2026 funds to terminate the E-7A rapid prototype contract or shut down its production line. That was a limit on termination actions for that fiscal year, not a permanent funding guarantee. The FY2026 defense authorization therefore constrained the cancellation plan without establishing a long-term procurement commitment.
The next budget cycle added another turn. The President’s FY2027 request left out E-7 funding, but the Air Force and Defense secretaries later sought to restore development funding. The House Committee on Appropriations described a proposed $1,549,098,000 in FY2027 Air Force research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) for rapid prototypes and continued engineering and manufacturing development. That amount was a funding realignment described in a committee report—not proof of final appropriation, expenditure, or a production order. The House committee report also supported restoring funding for the E-2D Hawkeye, treating it as complementary to E-7 rather than an either-or replacement.
In June 2026, Defense News reported that the White House sought more than $1.55 billion through a budget amendment. The House committee backed the E-7 realignment but restored the proposed $651 million offset from the Navy’s E-2D program. The report said seven E-7 aircraft were on contract for development: two rapid prototypes and five added by modification. Those are developmental aircraft, not an operational production fleet. Defense News’ June 2026 account describes the funding effort, not a completed appropriation.

A July 2026 Congressional Record provision called for an E-7 program-of-record procurement and fielding schedule, a funding profile, and certification that retiring E-3 aircraft would not create a gap in airborne warning, battle management, or command and control. Its appearance in the legislative process does not by itself establish that the provision became law. The Congressional Record text is evidence of a proposed requirement, not confirmation of final enactment.
Why did the Air Force plan to cancel the E-7?
The stated rationale reported in 2025 centered on cost growth and doubts about whether the aircraft could survive in contested airspace. Defense News attributed to an Air Force official an estimate that the per-aircraft cost had risen from $588 million to $724 million. This is an official’s estimate as reported in 2025, not an independently audited final cost. The Pentagon’s alternative approach at the time included pursuing space-based sensors and adding E-2D Hawkeye aircraft. Defense News’ June 2025 report describes the cancellation rationale and alternatives.

- High-quality 1:200-scale plastic model
- Simple snap-fit design
- Authentic markings
- The model measures 7"H x 12"L x 15.25"W
- Recommended age is 14 and up
Those objections remain part of the debate, but the sources do not establish a settled technical finding that the E-7 cannot operate in contested airspace. Nor do they show that space-based sensors can fully replace the airborne warning and battle-management mission. The options differ in basic form—airborne aircraft versus space-based sensing—and the available public material does not provide a complete, apples-to-apples comparison of performance, cost, availability, or transition risk.
Why does the E-3 transition matter?
The E-7 question is also about replacing capability as the Air Force retires its E-3 airborne warning and control aircraft. The House appropriations report described E-7 as a modern replacement for lost battle-management capability and argued that the conflict in Iran reinforced the need for airborne battle management. The committee’s support for both E-7 and E-2D points to a transition involving complementary aircraft, not a simple choice of one platform in place of another.

That transition makes timing important. A budget request does not establish when aircraft will be delivered or enter service, and the July 2026 proposed requirement specifically raised the risk of a capability gap as E-3s retire. The available actions do not establish a final schedule or guarantee that a gap will be avoided.

Development aircraft were reported under contract in June 2026, and officials sought FY2027 development funding. That supports saying development activity was underway and funding was being pursued. It does not mean the United States had begun buying a production fleet or that the E-7 had entered operational service. A request for RDT&E funding supports development work; a final appropriation, production authorization, delivery schedule, and fielding decision are separate steps.

As of the latest legislative text described above, the careful answer is that the 2025 cancellation plan had not resolved the program’s future. FY2027 funding and legislative actions pointed toward an effort to continue or restore the program, but the reviewed record does not establish final FY2027 appropriations, enactment of the July language, or a later definitive acquisition decision.
