The move extended Oculus’s Seattle presence, first reported in 2015. GeekWire connected the office activity to planned regional light rail, but did not report that Meta said transit was the reason for its leases.
What Meta leased in Seattle
GeekWire reported on January 10, 2022, that Meta had confirmed lease deals for about 100,000 square feet at Home Plate and Stadium Innovation Center, in the city’s stadium district southwest of T-Mobile Park. Meta said its virtual-reality division would continue to have a presence in the area. The company was still deciding which other Meta teams would use the expanded offices. GeekWire’s January 2022 report described the agreements as an expansion of the company’s local footprint.
How the new leases fit Oculus’s earlier Seattle presence
The Stadium Innovation Center was not a new location for the company. In June 2015, GeekWire reported that Oculus had leased 51,000 square feet there. That earlier lease established a Seattle base for the virtual-reality headset maker; the 2022 announcement added Home Plate to the reported lease activity. GeekWire’s 2015 article provides the earlier context.
What the reported regional footprint figures mean
The January 2022 GeekWire story also put the leases in a wider regional context. It reported that Meta had more than 3 million square feet of space across the Seattle region at the time, including offices north of downtown and in Redmond, and that its commitment in Bellevue’s Spring District exceeded 1.8 million square feet. These are historical figures reported by GeekWire, not current totals or independently audited disclosures.

Why the 2022 story linked office locations to light rail
The article described East Link as a planned connection between Seattle and Eastside cities including Bellevue and Redmond. Its real-estate interpretation was that rail could make it easier for employees to commute across the region or travel between offices, potentially reducing reliance on employer shuttles. That was an interpretation of regional mobility—not a reason Meta gave for signing its leases.
Eric Lonergan, then Savills Seattle executive managing director and co-market leader, said the connection would be “a game-changer not only for getting people around the Eastside internally but getting people more easily into downtown Seattle,” and added, “It’s going to help all the business centers around the region connect.” His remarks describe the anticipated regional benefit as viewed in January 2022.

How to read the East Link timing
GeekWire’s January 2022 article said East Link was slated to open in phases in 2023 and 2024. That was the schedule forecast at the time, not a current statement of service. Sound Transit’s system expansion overview, accessed October 8, 2026, describes the continuing voter-approved regional buildout, including Link light rail projects; it does not by itself establish the current operating status of every East Link segment. What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- It establishes a reported Meta office expansion of about 100,000 square feet across two stadium-district properties as of January 2022.
- It shows continuity with Oculus’s earlier Stadium Innovation Center lease, reported in 2015.
- It records a real-estate view that planned rail could improve connections among regional business centers.
- It does not establish that light rail caused Meta to lease the space, which teams ultimately occupied it, or how much space Meta holds in the region today.
