Money managers were still net long soybeans, but they did not increase that position in the latest available CFTC report. As of September 29, 2026, the Managed Money category held 246,558 net long contracts in Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures and options combined—18,601 fewer than a week earlier.
What the latest CFTC soybean report shows
The latest report available as of October 8, 2026, covers positions on September 29, 2026. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) reported these Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures-and-options positions for Managed Money:
| Position measure | September 29, 2026 | Change from September 22 |
|---|---|---|
| Long contracts | 280,875 | -19,867 |
| Short contracts | 34,317 | -1,266 |
| Spreading contracts | 132,706 | -5,107 |
| Net long (long minus short) | 246,558 | -18,601 |
| Market open interest | 1,090,227 | -24,101 |
These are contract counts in the CFTC’s September 29, 2026 combined report. The listed soybean contract size is 5,000 bushels. The net position is calculated by subtracting short contracts from long contracts: 280,875 − 34,317 = 246,558. Spreading positions are reported separately and are not added to that calculation.
What “net long” means
In this report, “net long” describes the balance of reported long and short contracts in the CFTC’s Managed Money trader category. It means the category held more long contracts than short contracts; it does not mean every trader in the category was bullish, or that the figure identifies any individual trader.

Managed Money is a CFTC classification, not a count of all investors or all market participants. The report also records spreading positions, which are distinct from outright long and short positions. For a consistent week-to-week comparison, compare the same commodity, trader category, and report format.
Why the net position fell
From September 22 to September 29, reported longs decreased by 19,867 contracts, while reported shorts decreased by 1,266. Fewer longs pull the net figure down; fewer shorts push it up. Combining those changes gives a net decline of 18,601 contracts. The position therefore remained net long, but the balance was less large than in the prior weekly report.

How to read COT data—and what it cannot tell you
The CFTC’s Commitments of Traders reports are weekly snapshots based on Tuesday positions and generally published on Friday. The commission explains that “The COT reports provide a breakdown of each Tuesday’s open interest for futures and options on futures markets in which 20 or more traders hold positions equal to or above the reporting levels established by the CFTC.” See the CFTC Commitments of Traders page for report information.
A change in the weekly net position records a change in reported exposure; it does not establish why traders changed positions or predict where soybean prices will go. The CFTC publishes the breakdown, but says it does not analyze the data or make recommendations. Treat positioning as one market statistic, not a standalone price forecast.

When comparing reports or building a time series, do not assume futures-only and futures-and-options combined figures are interchangeable.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
