A newly created, state-owned Mexican airline began commercial flights under the Mexicana de Aviación name on 26 December 2023. It was a relaunch using the acquired brand—not the uninterrupted return of the historical airline, which had suspended operations in 2010.
What happened to Mexicana de Aviación?
The historical airline stopped operating in 2010. In August 2023, Mexico’s federal government announced an agreement to acquire the Mexicana brand. The government said proceeds from the agreement would be distributed among more than 7,000 former workers. A newly created state carrier, Aerolínea del Estado Mexicano, then began flying under that name.
The distinction matters: the airline that took to the skies in 2023 was a new state-owned operation using the historic brand, not the old operating company resuming service unchanged. The government’s 10 August 2023 announcement covered the acquisition and former-worker agreement; the Defense Ministry announced the restart on 26 December.
When did the new airline begin flying?
Commercial operations began on 26 December 2023. The scheduled inaugural route was from Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) to Tulum. The Associated Press reported that weather forced the flight to divert to Mérida, so the inaugural service did not land at its planned destination. What did Mexicana’s launch operation look like?
Launch-era figures provide a snapshot of the initial service, not a current fleet or route listing. In June 2024, Grupo Olmeca-Maya-Mexica reported that the airline served 14 domestic destinations and began with three Boeing 737s and two Embraer 145s.
The same government-owned group reported 140,762 passengers and 2,990 operations during the airline’s first 163 days, from 26 December 2023 through 6 June 2024. These are attributed government-reported totals, not independently audited performance figures. The group’s June 2024 report contains the launch-period figures.

What did later reports say about its scale?
A Noticias C21 account of a federal press conference, published 1 April 2026, reported 953,624 passengers carried, 14,473 flights, 1,022,670 tickets sold and service to 14 destinations. Those are figures reported by the outlet from federal remarks; they should not be read as independently audited accounts.
The same report discussed future aircraft deliveries and proposed routes. Those were plans at the time of the report, not proof that each delivery or route later came to pass. What does the government project for the airline?
The federal government’s 2025–2030 institutional program projects a 57.6% increase in passengers by 2030 compared with 2023 in its medium scenario. That is a planning projection, not an achieved result or a guarantee of future traffic. The program published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación sets out the projection.
