What is the senior Post Office worker accused of doing?
Computer Weekly reported on 21 October 2024 that an internal Post Office inquiry, called Project Acer, examined an allegation that a senior employee instructed staff to destroy or conceal material of possible interest to the public inquiry. Its account drew on a witness statement by Post Office company secretary Rachel Scarrabelotti. The reporting said Project Acer alerted the Metropolitan Police to the possibility of an offence under the Inquiries Act or attempting to pervert the course of justice; those were possibilities raised in the account, not police charging decisions. Computer Weekly’s report does not identify the employee.
What do the reported files show?
Computer Weekly said Post Office records referred to around 2,000 hardcopy files for police to understand and check for possible interference or motive. That was a figure in an October 2024 account of records being collated. It is not a confirmed count of files destroyed, proof that any material was concealed, or a current verified total for the police investigation.
How does this relate to Operation Olympos?
Operation Olympos is the wider national police investigation into potential offences connected with the Horizon scandal, coordinated by the Metropolitan Police. The Met’s public portal lists potential offences including perjury and perverting the course of justice, with a potential offence period from 1999 to 2017. Police.uk’s overview says the operation began in January 2020 and involves the NPCC, the Met and forces across the UK.

The reported Project Acer allegation is one matter within the broader context of the Horizon scandal; figures for Operation Olympos as a whole should not be treated as figures for this specific allegation. A separate Department for Business and Trade investigation concerned the Post Office’s Network Transformation Programme from 2010 to 2019. The government describes it as separate from the Horizon IT Public Inquiry; it is not Project Acer or the Met allegation. The department’s investigation page sets out that distinction.
What is the latest published picture of the wider police investigation?
In an update dated 26 May 2026, the National Police Chiefs’ Council said Operation Olympos held eight million documents and that 13 of 53 people under investigation had been interviewed under caution. These are NPCC figures for the wider operation, not for Project Acer or the evidence-destruction allegation.

The NPCC said the investigation would need to increase from 111 to 210 staff to meet its proposed timetable for submitting files for charging decisions in late 2027 or early 2028, with that timetable dependent on additional resources. It also reported a £2.8 million Home Office Special Grant and a projected budget of up to £19.3 million for 2026/27 and beyond. Commander Stephen Clayman, the NPCC’s national lead for Operation Olympos, said: “The realities, however, are that our investigation remains hugely complex.” The NPCC update covers the wider investigation and does not report a finding or charging decision about the Project Acer allegation.

In October 2024, Computer Weekly reported that the Post Office was discussing a possible return to work after finding insufficient evidence for a separate discrimination allegation.
