Meta reportedly fired about two dozen employees at its Los Angeles office in October 2024 after they used workplace meal credits for purchases the benefit was not intended to cover. The Financial Times reported the terminations, and CNN reporting carried by KESQ cited a source familiar with the company who confirmed around two dozen firings. Meta declined to comment on the meal-credit cases in the Financial Times report.
Why did Meta reportedly fire employees over meal credits?
The reports said the employees allegedly used credits intended to pay for meals while working to buy household goods or to have food delivered to their homes. The Financial Times described firings after longer-running abuse, while saying employees who violated the rules only occasionally were reprimanded instead. That distinction came from a person familiar with the matter, not from published case records or an internal policy document.
The Financial Times reported that the benefit was offered at smaller offices without cafeterias and could be used through a delivery service. The amounts reported in 2024 were $20 for breakfast and $25 each for lunch and dinner. Those figures describe the benefit as reported at the time; they do not establish Meta’s current policy.
What did employees reportedly buy with the credits?
The Financial Times and The Guardian cited examples including toothpaste, acne pads, laundry detergent, wine glasses and tea. The reports also said some employees had meals sent to their homes, although the credits were intended for meals at work. The Financial Times said some workers pooled credits.

The Financial Times also recounted an anonymous former employee’s post on Blind. The former employee said they used credits for items such as toothpaste and tea on days they were not eating at the office, and later acknowledged that practice during an HR investigation. This is an account relayed through the newspaper’s reporting, not a published personnel record or an independently verified account of every fired employee’s conduct.
How many Meta employees were fired?
The Financial Times described about two dozen Los Angeles employees as having been fired. CNN reporting carried by KESQ separately attributed confirmation of around two dozen firings to a source familiar with Meta. These are reported estimates, not an exact total confirmed publicly by the company.

Were the meal-credit firings part of Meta layoffs?
The reporting placed the meal-credit terminations shortly before separate team changes involving WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs. The Financial Times said the terminations occurred the prior week and that a restructuring began days later. The reports do not establish that the firings were part of that restructuring.
A Meta spokesperson told CNN, in a statement carried by KESQ, that “Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy.” That statement addressed the separate team changes, not the meal-credit cases.

What remains unclear about the meal-credit cases?
The reviewed reports do not publish Meta’s written meal-credit rules, individual transaction records, the length of time each employee allegedly misused the benefit, or the precise basis for each termination. The Financial Times said Meta declined to comment on the meal-credit firings. As a result, the specific rationale and circumstances for each employee remain unconfirmed in the public reporting.
