The headline “Musk Is Suddenly Groveling to Get Back in Trump’s Good Graces as He Realizes He’s Made a Terrible Mistake” is an interpretation, not a verified account of Elon Musk’s private thinking. Public reporting documents a June 2025 break over policy and threatened federal contracts, followed by Donald Trump’s public statement in July that he wanted Musk and U.S. businesses to thrive. That statement showed a change in Trump’s public tone; it did not establish that Musk regretted his actions or that the two had privately reconciled.
What the headline claims—and what is established
Futurism published the headline on June 6, 2025, framing Musk as trying to regain Trump’s favor after recognizing a mistake. The reporting cited here establishes the public dispute and Trump’s later comments, but it does not independently verify Musk’s motives or the headline’s claim about what he realized. That distinction matters: a public overture from one person is not proof of the other person’s private intentions. The available sources also do not establish the two men’s relationship as of October 8, 2026, so the 2025 events should not be presented as evidence of a current rapprochement.
How the dispute unfolded in 2025
June: a public break over policy and contracts
Reuters dates the public break to June 5, 2025. The fallout followed Musk’s opposition to Trump’s spending legislation and Trump’s threats to cancel federal contracts involving Musk’s companies. Reuters, via TradingView

July: Trump publicly adopts a more supportive tone
On July 24, Trump denied intending to destroy Musk’s companies by removing subsidies and said he wanted Musk and businesses in the United States to thrive. Reuters and the Associated Press reported the statement. It documents Trump’s public posture on that date, not a private reconciliation or a return to any advisory role for Musk. Why the business context matters—but does not prove motive
The dispute had consequences relevant to Musk’s businesses because Trump’s threats concerned federal contracts and subsidies. The AP also placed Trump’s July statement in the context of Tesla and SpaceX. It reported that Tesla’s revenue fell 12% and profit fell 16% in the April–June 2025 quarter, and that Musk warned of potentially rough quarters. These are historical figures reported in 2025, not a picture of Tesla’s current performance. Associated Press

AP reported that Tesla shares fell 8.2% on the day of Trump’s July 24 post and were down more than 24% year to date at that time. Those dated market figures describe the backdrop to the July statement; they do not show that Musk made a particular decision for financial reasons, or that Trump’s post repaired their relationship. - Established: Musk opposed Trump’s spending legislation, Trump threatened contract cancellations involving Musk’s companies, and Trump later publicly said he wanted Musk and U.S. businesses to thrive.
- Not established by these reports: that Musk privately realized he had made a terrible mistake, that his actions amounted to groveling, or that the men privately reconciled.
- Not established for the present: the sources cited here do not show the status of their relationship on October 8, 2026.
Trump’s July 2025 remarks are best understood as a public signal about his stated position at that time. Calling them proof that Musk had regained Trump’s favor—or that Musk sought to do so after a private realization—goes beyond what the cited reporting confirms.
