Mukesh and Nita Ambani helped Anil Ambani meet a court-ordered payment deadline in March 2019, according to reports at the time. Reliance Communications said it paid Ericsson Rs 550 crore, including interest, a day before the deadline. A wave of near-identical posts then praised Mukesh Ambani under #MukeshNitaSaveAnil—but the available reporting did not prove that the posts were paid for or commissioned.

Why was Anil Ambani facing jail?

The dispute concerned unpaid dues owed by Reliance Communications (RCom) to Ericsson India, not a criminal conviction. In February 2019, the Supreme Court found Anil Ambani and two RCom directors in contempt in Ericsson’s case. Scroll reported that the court gave RCom four weeks to pay and said Ambani faced three months’ imprisonment if the company failed to comply. Read Scroll’s February 20, 2019, account of the order.

The consequence reported was conditional: the jail threat followed if the payment deadline was missed. It was not a report that Ambani had already been convicted of a crime or sent to prison.

What was paid, and what did the Ambanis do?

On March 18, RCom said it had paid Ericsson Rs 550 crore, including interest, one day before the March 19 deadline. Scroll separately reported total dues of Rs 571 crore. Those are distinct figures: Rs 550 crore was the company-reported payment, while Rs 571 crore was Scroll’s reported total-due amount. Read Scroll’s March 18 report of the payment and statement.

Scroll reported that Mukesh Ambani helped his brother meet the payment. Anil Ambani publicly thanked Mukesh and Nita Ambani, saying: “My sincere and heartfelt thanks to my respected elder brother, Mukesh and Nita, for standing by me during these trying times, and demonstrating the importance of staying true to our strong family values by extending this timely support.”

The public statement establishes that Anil Ambani thanked them for support; the cited reporting does not specify how the assistance was provided. It does not establish whether it was a personal loan, a company transfer, or a gift.

Was #MukeshNitaSaveAnil a paid Twitter campaign?

Scroll reported that #MukeshNitaSaveAnil trended in India after the payment news broke on March 18, 2019. Its March 19 feature documented hundreds of identical or near-identical praise posts, including a recurring double-space typing error in tweets describing Mukesh Ambani’s “nature.” Scroll said the wave looked coordinated. Read Scroll’s March 19 feature.

That pattern is evidence of repetitive posting, not proof of who arranged or funded it. The article did not identify an agency, client, payment, or commissioning record for this specific hashtag activity. Calling it a proven paid PR campaign would go beyond what the reporting establishes.

How does the 2017 hashtag episode fit?

Scroll also recalled a separate December 2017 episode, when users trended #AnilAmbaniWalksTheTalk and #AmbaniWalksTheTalk after RCom sold wireless assets to Reliance Jio. The feature said the deal helped the company pare debt by Rs 39,000 crore. This is Scroll’s retrospective account, not an independently verified financial statement in the reporting cited here. The earlier hashtag activity provides context for the 2019 discussion, but does not establish who organized or paid for either wave of posts.
